Some advice!

Hey all! Let me introduce myself. I am Tony from Wisconsin and I pilot an '88 911. I have a friend who is looking at a '83 928s model Porsche. I don't know much of these cars, but he is looking for some advice. any prepurchase wisdom to be shared? Anyone have any 0-60 specs on this years (310hp?) model? Any significant issues that should have been addressed over the years? Recommended things to check? Thanks for your time!

Your question about the 928S will depend on the engine code if its a USA or ROW (rest of the world) car

To find the engine code, find the top rad hose where it connects to the engine, go about 2 in. forward of the hose clamp and then 2 in. down under the hose, there is a small rectangular block with the numbers on it
For USA
M28/20 =83-84 928S Auto 3 speed
M28/19 = 83-84 928S 5 speed.. These engines give 234 hp

Now if you have a Euro engine ( ROW)
M28/12 = 80- 83 928S auto 3 speed
M28/11 = 80-83 928S 5 speed , These engines give 300hp

The Euro engines for 84 -86 give 310 with twin distributors and the early LH system
M28/22 =84-86 928S auto 4speed
M28/21 = 84-86 928S 5 speed

you can print off an engine code sheet at www.928gt.com find page 2 and then go to tips and links

928's don't have gearing that favors 0-60 times, think around 7 to 8 seconds on a US 83 with a 5 spd maybe half a second faster than the AT.

Without a full inspection by someone highly experienced in the 928 the cost of repairs are a roll of the dice between nothing and a serious $20k money pit.

My own standards before I pay for an inspection are, original paint in a condition I can live with given minor touch ups, recent serious driving history, repair history free of mickey mouse fixes, and a price to make it tempting, but first the car has to be tempting regardless of price or I don't even dig into it.

Shopping for a 928 by price is a recipe for doom.
