Mileage counter stopped working
Hi All
My 2 mileage counters in the car stooped working. Well, they didn't work at the time I bought the car. The thing is that the previous owner did say that the bottom one didn't work very well but the top one works....yeah right... Anyway, if I press on the "reset" button then the lower counter does make some reset sounds but it is not working when the car is in motion just like the top one. I know that the 2 counters are electric so there is no cable going into the instrument cluster...any ideas what should I check? I know that before I bought the car, the "clutch release bearing" was replaced...maybe some necessary wires were disconnected and affecting the mileage counters? Thanks for your help! |
There is a gear in the odometer that breaks, Roger has them at ************ There is also an electrical connection in the spare tire well that might need cleaning.
A recent thread had a lot more detail, maybe we can get a link to it here. |
Thanks! maybe someone has a picture of the area where I should look for that electric connection in the spare tire area? I didnt see any connections there...

Standing at the back of the car its in the top right corner, a flat 4 pin black connector, maybe under a thin panel.

Well, I checked the 4 pin connector and it is good. but still BOTH counters doesnt work.
So I have some more questions: 1) If the small plastic gear is broken then it affects BOTH counters? or only the lower one? 2) is there any other electric connection that I can check along the way? 3) near the 4 pin connection I saw another 3 pin connection that is not connected to anywhere...can somebody know what it is? |

I have checked the wires in the spare tire area and the contacts are good.
However, the main ODO meter doesnt work :( Is there any fuse that can cause this problem? Maybe I should check for the wiring in some other places? Any ideas? |
to fix this you have to remove the POD and then take apart the speedometer, then you will see the gear in question,
use a fork placed under the indicator arm to pop off the speedometer indicator, Put a piece of wood ( paint stick under the fork so you dont damage the face) when you pop off the indicator then remove the 2 screws on the face then you can take apart the housing |
Maybe I should check the electronic connection to the gear? Before removing the POD?
Maybe something was disconnected there? Before I bought the car, the previous owner replaced the "release baring". Maybe the electric wires go near that place and was disconnected? It is strange because the previous owner insists that the ODO meter was working - only the lower one was broken but the upper was ok. |
Still...
http://www.mcarterbrown.com/forums/i...thout_pics.gif As merlin says. You will also know it's the infamous expensive disintegrating gear if you have small pieces of plastic gear when you take out the Instrument Panel from the Pod. Theres a step by step on this too. |
There is no need for pictures here!
Do you want to look at the connector in the spare wheel area? it is just a connector and it is ok. When I will remove the POD and have a problem there - then pictures will be needed. For now I am only asking where else to look beside the spare wheel area which is OK and the POD area...thats all. |
Previous owners always say the odometer just stopped working. ;)
Before you take out the pod, order the replacement gear from Roger so you don't end up taking it out twice. |
how much do those gears go for?
|
Here's a link to a different vendor. Same Gear.
http://www.rennbay.com/-c-32.html Here's the instructions: http://www.928oc.org/tip/tip476.htm There is a better tutorial out there but can't seem to find it. |
I talked to roger and the gear was only 27.50 plus a few more bucks for shipping. Pretty cheep
|
The gear in question is the one thats driven by the elex motor in the speedo housing
|
have you checked the sender unit in the diff housing?..look under the car from the back...on the backing plate in the diff, you will see it..kinda little to the right side..there's a steel pin holding it in place, its about 1-1/2 inch long...and the wire coming from it
