1988 5 speed torque tube removal
Good day
I am having a little trouble with the last few bolts removing my torque tube. Suspension is down, transmission is out, exhaust is off, heat shields are off, bellhousing is off, my last four bolts holding front of torque tube are all that is left the bottom two wont be a problem but the top two are in a terrible spot. Does anybody Know if I am supposed to do something with front pinch bolt or clutch to create more access even if I get them out not sure how I would ever get torque wrench in there to re-install with proper tourque. ![]() |

Undo and remove the 2 allen head bolts which hold the coupling sleeve in there.
Once the bolts are out slide the coupler rearward INSIDE the TT. Once you have this done you will have more room to be able to remove those 2 bolts. I normally use a selection of 17mm wrenches, and have been able to get an air rachet in there as well. But the latter is VERY tricky. |

Don't forget PB Blaster or Kroil... You're almost done, so this is probably already covered...

Based on the rusty appearance of the throw out bearing it should be inspected, also some grease applied to the part that the TOB rides on. (guide tube)
Remember that the TOB is spinning at engine speed all the time so if isnt not smooth then it should be replaced as well as the pilot bearing. Also dont wash the engine as the water will run down the rear of the valley and into the opening for the release arm connection then down into your TOB and creating a failure due to rust/corrosion
