what else do I need?
I brought my 928 home yesterday after keeping it at my father's for 6 months while we worked on the bigger problems.
On the way home my lower radiator hose apparently formed a pin-hole leak. I figured I might as well replace the upper hose and thermostat too while I'm at it. Is there anything else I should replace that I'm not thinking of? In addition, I noticed my electric fan is not working. How do I test it? Thanks in advance for any and all help. |
Inner seal on the water bridge for the thermostat should be replaced, ditto oring.
Aux fan should run if the radiator is too hot, switch on the lower driver side front of radiator, or when the AC is running. Maybe jumper at either switch, or power directly to the fan connector. |
I believe there is a switch to the Aux Fan on the Drier with the Sight Glass on it (AC Part). You can jump that and it should kick on. Or like Mike says, put 12v to the fans connector plug.

if you drain the system remove the lower switch on the DS front of the radiator stick it in some boiling water and see when it closes with an ohm meter..
You could just replace it, this takes one part out of the fan not running, check the fuses and the wire connections |
You can jumper the realy at the fuse panel to determine quickly if the fan works. After that as merlin said... I would start at the 212 switch. Seems to be a pain to boil water and such. Used to test thermostats that way untill I realized that once you have them out they are very inexpensive to reaplace. Besides... you pull it boil water and test it then two weeks later all the amonia leaks out because it was disturbed? Check it at the relay. (location available on 928gts.com) then replace the switch. Why do you think it doesn't work? Fan should only come on when a/c is running or when temp gauge is over the 3rd mark.

vdubr928-I know it doesn't work because while idling in the garage for about 15 minutes the car started to overheat (central warning light and red light on the temp gauge started flashing, the temp. gauge needle was maxed out) and the elec. fan still did not come on. Now it looks like I will be doing a tb and wp change too. This sucks.. |

Thanks for the encouraging words Leo. And to think, when my father-in-law gave it to us he said all it needed was a new alternator and new tires! I've made a list of everything that I CURRENTLY know is wrong with the car, and there are 41 things, including:
-a new steering rack (ouch) -a new AC compressor (double ouch) -no power to the climate control system, pod lights, rear tail lamps at night (only light up when braking), antenna, side mirrors, and alternator exciter wire -oil pan gasket -thermostat, hoses, elec. fan -now, water pump, tb, tb tensioner, etc. I could go on, but thinking about it makes me want to bank my head on the desk. Now, convincing my wife to keep it, with all the money that it will take, will actually be the hardest part! |

Think somebady is rebuilding the racks. There is a upgraded a/c kit out there $700 with the lines and a new compressor and dryer. Griffiths or somebody makes it. Climate control might be a relay. Lights could be a ground problem. Use a Mercedes power antenna. They are the same and much cheaper and more available. You sure it's the oil pan? have you checked the rear seal? Thermostat and hoses are cheap and easy. You're singing to the choir on the tb and pump. :) |
