82 928 us No start

Hey guys, My 82 928 us won't start. Have spark and tons of fuel pressure. Injectors are not firing. Won't have time to work on it till the morning. Hoping for some pointers as to where to start. Headed to work. Thanks fellow 928 friends.

P.S. Black GTS in Colorado Springs..... Anyone? Saw you driving in Stetson Hills the other day.

jump relay XVI, I believe you need to jump from 30 to 2 places for both sides of injectors, read the relay. That will more than likely fix the problem then you just replace the relay.
If that doesn't fix report back

OK... I'm with you. Let you know in the morning. Just a piece of info. When I fisrt put the motor in the car it did this. Magically fixed itself for 3 months. Sounds like a relay or something to me.

Injectors don't fire, relay or green wire.

Have spark though. Doesn't that rule out green wire?

OK, Here is what I know. Relay XVI (the center relay on the top row) has no effect. I can manually jump the contacts. (30 and 87) and there is no change. The trigger wire for this relay never get power so whatever triggers this relay is not sending a signal. The green wire "looks" fine and I am getting spark which leads me to beleive that it is working since this wire also triggers the coil?

The car tries to start. Fires on a few clynders but just won't catch.

Won't Start

I had a very similar situation some time ago, did a lot of checking and parts changing. Turned out to be the FI relay. You may also have an ignition switch that is going bad. I changed mine during the time I was trying to find my problem.

When you jumper the FI relay and others it runs the full current through the ignition switch, toasting it pretty quick.

Pretty sure I need a fuel pump. Injectors are clicking and plugs are sparking. Where can I get a good price. Looking for cheap right now since I just bought a double din deck and seats.

You said you have spark and tons of fuel pressure? now you say you think its your pump.
Maybe we should start from the begining?

If I were you, I would jumper ingnition, fuel and injectors and see if it fires up. Make sure you aren't keeping all those jumpers on.

Also look at the fuel injector relay, I remember reading that there needs to be a jumper to 2 spots. But you say the injectors are clicking now, so check the others.

Yeah, when I open the fuel rail and let the pump run I do have lots of fuel spraying out. I don't have a pressure tester so I'm just eyeing it. I deffinately have spark on all clynders tested by moving my timing light trigger to each wire. I can hear the pump run (it's really noisy but has been that way for months) so I was headed in other directions. The relay that is labeled XVI on my panel does not have two output leads only four pins. Power, ground, trigger, output. Is there a good pic of my panel with labels somewhere so I can make sure I'm on the correct relay? Either way... My thinking is that if I have spark and the injectors are clicking (tested with a stethascope while turning over then removing the wire while listening and the click goes away) then all systems are go. I must be just below the 30-40lbs that it takes to push fuel through the injectors?

P.S. I just ordered a fuel filter. It will be here in the morning. Where is that located?

If you jumper so the pump runs all the time the jumper is in, not just when the ign switch is on, then you are going directly to battery power and it won't effect the switch.

That seems the logical way to do it, so yup, I am barking up the wrong tree.

BTW did you jumper the fuel pump or fuel injection relay?

Injector relay. I can hear the pump running? Are you suggesting that I may be getting voltage drop through the pump relay? Hmm.. I'll try that today. Either way I am doing the filter today. I'll drop the pan back there and check all connections and such.

Thanks again.

I found the correct ignition relay and zoltan you are correct about the two pins. The relay has been tested and is functioning. Thanks for the info on the diagrams. Wish i had a pressure tester.

Changed fuel filter. Man, couldn't hardly blow through the old one. Still the same deal. I'm guessing the pump is dying. Sat for years before I bought it a few months ago. I've been pretty lucky with the car so far. I'll let you guys know when a fuel pump arrives.

When I got my 82 US I had similar problems. Mine also sat for a couple years. The fuel that is in the lines dry up and leave behind a lot of gunk to clog up everything. I suggest taking apart ALL the fuel lines. From the gas tank up to the dampener, down through the regulators and fuel injectors and through the return line back to the tank and clean them all out. I had crap in the lines as well as in the injector screens. Also while its all apart you can replace all the rubber fuel lines on the injectors and else where so your car does not go up in flames. I am hoping to finally hear mine run this weekend, we'll see.
