The last central lock question, I promise!

Hello everyone, the central lock switch on the the dash stopped working after having some work done to the drivers door, anyway I checked the blade fuse, and the two inline fuses behind the fuse panel, all were ok, when you use the key to lock the doors from the outside, both doors lock, when driving and you push the look button, it does not light and the doors do not lock, now the question, is it the switch on the dash thats combined with the warning indicator bad? is it the central lock control box brain? does anyone have any idea's about what to check next?, my thought was to replace the switch on the dash, any idea's on where I can get the replacement switch cheap, thanks to all that reply!

cross post 82 i have no fuses in those two inlines behind fuse panel, cant seem to get at autobody shops or pp , 1. what are the fuses for 2.what sizes to get and 3. where can i get, if i put two in lines in, need range fuse holds if these fuses arent available , would rather in line than would be able to replace. seems to be glass/spiral inside and silver end caps (4/250 T.O. am i close is that for both)

I'm not sure why the fuses are in some models and not others, mine is a 1988s4, I have never seen the fuses in a schematic, I was only told they are there, when the body shop had the door off, they must have shorted some wire, and blew the blade fuse, but a check of the two in line glass fuses showed both ok, so now I bought a used central lamp indicator with an a/c switch and a central lock switch/light, (all one unit) I have yet to install it for a test, though, but I hope this solves my problem - thanks for the reply

The inline fuses are there on central lock equipped cars up through '88. They do appear on the schematics e.g.on the S4 cars its on the Body Page.

The central lock panel has a connector in the console - I'd check the connector is well seated and see that no wires are loose on the back of the panel (may need to be resoldered). It's a simple push button switch (with illumination) but for test purposes you can substitute any other push to make switch.

This would not be caused by any work to the drivers door. If the locks still work from each other the basic circuit is fine. Did they do anything in the console at the same time?

I believe the original fuses were 250mA or 400mA but I think more readily available 500mA would be fine too.

Thanks Alan,
when they worked on the door, the blade fuse did blow, after replacing that, the locks worked with the key, both locking motors would run, but while driving down the highway, a push of the central lock switch no longer activated the system, and there was no red light, so following the advise from the forum, several people said to check the two tube fuses, which I did, but they checked ok with a meter, I think now that the blade fuse failing and the button no longer working was just coincidence, I bought a used part (switch), I just have to get out there and try it - Tom

Hello, On my 86 my central lock button works fine and locks both doors. When I try to lock the doors with the key on either door they dont lock. The alarm will arm though but doors dont lock. Is there a fuse for this or are both my doors broke? Thanks

Well - you can easily check the fuses - but for the central lock button to work on both doors both fuses must be good. It depends on year exactly how they are wired.

Sometimes deperate PO's diasble the lock from the doors due to lock cycling issues... this fault usually doesn't happen from the central locking button. But usually in this case butchery in the door occurs - often the severing of all wires to the locks - a rather brutal solution - yours doesn't seem to have this because if it did the locks wouldn't operate at all.

So its also possible someone unhooked the wiring from the door lights - this is where the locking motors ground to (do your door lights work?). The central locking bypasses this ground so it could still work.
