1983 928 cost when new

Sorry to hijack a tech forum with a trivia question. I'm a reporter working on a story and need some obscure Porsche info. Does anyone know how much a 1983 928 cost new? Is there a book out there that would tell me? I want to make sure my information is correct. Thanks for your help. Joe

U.S model or Euro model? 928 or 928 S? The 928 S was first available in the USA in 1983. Please be more specific.

A 1983 928 had a base MSRP of $38,500. The info is on my website (www.928registry.org).

You have to look at the page that has data from 1978 to 1982 first since only changes are noted year to year and the MSRP hadn't changed since 1980 and then again in 1984 when it went up to $44,000.

BTW sticker price may not reflect "what it sold for". In the Early 80's a 911 often got a dealer added sticker for "market value" of as much as $15k. Unfortunately I think many 928 failed to sell at MSRP and were discounted, maybe even a bunch depending on how well that model sold.

Volkswagen of America is increasing prices on its 1982 Porsche and Audi models an average of 3.2 percent, or about $516 a car, from 1981 levels, the auto maker said. I was driving in a brand new 928 in 1982 and 1983.

I drove a new 911 carrera in for its 1st service in the fall of 86 and saw one of the first 1987 S4's for sale in Guards Red.

I base what I say on 1st hand knowledge not wishful thinking or magazine stories or internet bs. The 928 was hot in the early 80's and dam expensive.

I do know that the 911 was not selling at a 60% premium ($15K on a $25K car) to sticker or a premium at all where I was. I knew people who wanted a 928 but settled for a 911 based on cost as most did.

Like Dan the photographer of the 928 production line pics. He was in the Californian market back then AND a wealthy guy. Wealthy enough to buy a 911S new and fly to europe to pick it up. That takes some dough and YET he says he would have preferred a 928 but could NOT afford it.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I was there in the showrooms, in the early and mid 80's, driving in these cars when new. They out sold their price competitors 2 to 1. It was an object of desire and awe. When you saw a 928 back then your jaw dropped.

Walking into the 1985 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal where I saw pantera's, lotus ' and 911 turbo's in general parking there was a black 928 euro with tinted windows parked in a roped off VIP parking area with an fcar. The 928 was THE car to own in the 80's if you had the dough. Period.

From 1981 to about 1987 I was on the list of people Porsche invited each year to a half day driving class to show the new models and drive them. My wife had a lot of business travel in those days as well, and my normal practice was to go with her and spend the time while she worked getting test drives, and generally making dealers regret being open before noon. Despite your certainty, I remain confident the pricing was just as I stated.

I was curious about the local new price of my '91 S4 here in New Zealand - and found several car mags from that era in a classics shop - they had list prices for all new cars available in the country each month. The 928S4 auto and 928GT manual were both $237,800 - about as much as a very nice house here in 1991. The only thing dearer in the Porsche range was a 911 Turbo. The only other cars more expensive were a couple of high end Mercedes and the Testarossa.

You do recognize that Dan at rennlist, Neil (above), both in Socal. myself in the northeast, Hold On (above) somewhere, and good ol stoolie have the opposite experience regarding what was being paid for a 928 than your experience. Plus all published data.

And when a 928 base sticker was 39K the 911 was now where near that. 928 was usually 150% of a 911.

Thanks for the definition of Pack. Most familiar with rust proofing and other over priced crap that no one ever took from a dealer. 15 Grand then would be 40,000 on todays 911 - thats one hell of a rustproofing job!

Nothing to do with 1983 price tags, but gives a point in time comparison - being at the ends of the Earth, transport for each type is probably about the same! And a 928 was around 7.5 times the price of a Jetta, and half the cost of a Testarossa.
