Fan controller question
 

I'm replacing the clutch fan ( its been refilled 2x and doesn't hold the charge - slips badly at any speed) and the a/c fan - with a 3000cfm Hoffman electric fan. The controller for the fan is one of those probes that has to be inserted into the radiator core. Anyone used one of these sensors, - any thoughts on best position in core?

I would put the temp sensor about 3 inches from the passenger side end tank this is the hottest part of the coolant.

Thats where i figured, I'm just more than a little cautious about pushing that sensor in there on a 28+ year old rad!

Zirgo must put some kind of "magic" dust in their stuff, the "3000" cfm fan uses 10 amps, not enough power for much of a real fan. I also saw several complaints of blades breaking off, and motor bearing going bad, and the warranty not being honored. Caveat Emptor.

Best to read the instructions for whatever you get, some want the probe hot side, some cold side.

Fan looks to be good quality, but i won't be removing the old clutch fan until i'm convinced its a good alternative. Probe instructions say inlet side of radiator, which is the top, passenger side, as MrMerlin suggested.

Why not just use the stock temp switch to turn the new fan on/off? Maybe swap the temp switch from the stock 92' to the 75' version.

You're replacing both the aux and clutch fan with the new electric right?

Yes, replacing the original electric fan, and removing clutch fan - -and I will probably replace the temp sensor with a 75c unit and forget the the probe sensor, just thinking about the options right now.

Plus all the wiring is already in place, just have to move/extend from the front to the rear of the radiator.

My 79 has the factory clutch/electric aux fan, but I did bypass the pressure switch on the receiver with a relay to kick on the electric aux fan anytime the A/C compressor kicks in. Might be worth looking into if your going to run an electric fan only setup, actually would recommend it regardless.
