Transmission probelm

Hi Guys

I have a problem to down shift from 3rd to 2nd gear and from 2nd to 1st. I can not shift right away - I have to wait number of seconds until it lets me to put into 2nd gear after being in 3rd.
I assume it is a Synchronizer problem? so it is better to buy the:
"Synchronizer 78-84 2&3 " ?

Other issue that I have is a bit hard to describe...when I put into 1st gear, and start driving, I hear a wierd sound that seems to come from the gear...the sound is like a rock in a metal can...there are no vibrations just this annoying sound. if the car is running and I press the clutch when I am still in 1st gear, the sound continues.
I dont have this sound in any other gear...
Does it sounds familiar to anybody? any idea what can it be?

I have to shift pretty slowly into all my gears; I've got to EASE the shifter into each. If I try to shift too fast, it just grinds. It's not quite as bad once the car gets warmed up.
Ahh, 2nd gear...Mine is very particular - it does not like RPMs at all. I have to shift from 1st to 2nd at pretty low RPMS or 2nd grinds and refuses to let me in. Same thing happens when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd with higher RPMs.

I'm thinking syncros too...Wait for more experienced guys like Merlin to chime in though.

Send a message via Yahoo to Mrmerlin
this is part of the trans syncro system you have , but you could try changing the oil first.
Replacing the syncros wont make much of a difference as there are usually toher worn parts, best to shift the trans slowly

and make sure that if your at a stop going from neutral to first that the car doesnt creep( foot off the brake) this indicates the clutch is dragging

Changing the oil made a night and day difference in my car. Now, you can't be slamming it into gears, but you can certainly drive it around without it grinding on the 1-2 upshift and with a slow touch even on the 3-2 and 2-1 downshifts.

I wonder how much of the old style synchro problem is related to the oil never being changed until "we" bought these old cars.

Wow...I never thought to change the oil...I was sure that it is better to take the car to some professional diagnostic since I was completely sure that it is a mechanical problem...but I guess that first I will better change the oil and then see if there is a difference.

If I understood Mrmerlin correctly, I have to rebuild the gear instead of changing only the synchros because of other old / warn parts...correct?

What kind of oil type is better to use in this gear?

Two popular flavors of tranny goop are Mobil 1 and Redline, both 75w90 gear oils.

I don't think changing the oil will fix your issue, but its a TINY expense with a tiny chance of working compared to pulling the tranny and rebuilding it and who knows what else.

Always remove the fill plug before the drain plug, if its stuck and won't come out, best to know this prior to draining out all the oil.

Remember, there are two drain plugs, front and rear. Mine grinds a touch as well, but I'm withholding judgement until I do the clutch disc alignment. I just put Amsoil 75W90 gear oil in mine. Did I make a boo-boo?

Changed my gear oil soon after i got mine- didn't make a difference.

Merlin- I am unclear as to what you were saying here:

Replacing the syncros wont make much of a difference as there are usually
toher worn parts

Can you please explain further?

The syncros have the friction material that wears off matching speeds, but once they are worn the dog teeth wear quickly. Look at the parts diagram in PET and you will see many expensive parts begging for replacement. Input shaft bearing is my personal favorite.
