NLA timing mark sender

For some time, us 931 S2 guys have been hampered with failing crank reference sensors, which are NLA from Porsche. We've been doing some digging over on 924board, and a couple of astute guys there noticed that the 944 and 928 "timing mark senders" as they're called in PET have the same sensor, albeit with a shorter lead. After doing some searching in PET, what I've learned is that the part number is 911.606.108.00, and was used on all 928s from 1984-88 and all 944s from 1984-onward.

Unfortunately, the 928/944 part is also NLA.

What are you guys doing when your crank sensors fail? If it's not a problem for you now, it soon will be. Maybe we need to pool our collective efforts to find a way to get these back on the market? Thoughts?

Are you talking about the (crank trigger) sensor that mounts on the bell housing? I just bought one so I believe they are available. Unless it is something different.
The one I purchased was a 944 606 11 Impulse Sensor (flywheel)
My old one is good, the plug is broken from age. If you want it you are welcome to it.

It's not the 928 crank sensor though...it's this part: 911.606.108.00, which I'm pretty sure is NLA. In a couple of the 944 forums I posted this to, they're telling me that this sensor was only used by the dealer as a diagnostic tool, and is not the operational crank reference sensor used by either the 944 or the 928. The latter has a much longer snout and won't work bolt-in for the 931. Because the 911 part no. is NLA, we may end up having to machine up spacers for the 944 sensor and then redo the tail of the plug where it connects to the 931's DITC unit.

Do you have a photo of the working end and a measurement of the length of the wire? The 911 part was about $30 so this seems like it might be a very different part, although some parts sites (e.g. Automobile Atlanta) list the identical part number for the 928...

Thanks in advance.

The timing mark sender is a diagnostic tool. The plug comes out behind the motor so you can hook up a senser to it easily. It is not used for engine management. If it is removed you will not even know it was supposed to be there. I am sure you can get you from the many used part dealers if you have to have it.

I have a 944 diagnostic sender and a good 931 crank reference sensor. They do not appear to have the same type of pickup. However, I'm going to put them on a 'scope to see what I can learn from that.
