928 and Maserati owners?

Would like to exchange impressions with anyone with a 928 and a 4200 Maserati.

I've been driving a 2002 4200 Spyder for the past several months, but its been a while since I've had any of my 928s on the road. The Maser has the cambiocorsa and to me its more fun than the 928 auto but not as pleasurable as the 928 manual. The Masers exhaust note is awesome at over 3000 rpm under full throttle, but I miss the rumble at lower rpms from my borla equiped 928 Manual back in the US. The Maser gives the relaxation of the automatic but with more fun. It seems that the manual 928 was more work, but more fun at lower speeds than the Maser. The slightly shorter wheelbase of the Maser does translate into nimbler handling despite its heavier weight. The Maser Spyder is nowhere as solid as the 928 but is only noticed by the cowl shake on rough roads. 928 seats are more comfortable but the overall impression of the Maser's interior is superior.

I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Dan

My impression is that the 928, and a Maseratti are kind of an apples to oranges comparison. I love Italian machinery (I have two Ducati's), but I think the 928's occupy a different niche. Wait for the next generation of 928, if Porsche decides to produce it, I think a lot of super car makers are going to be served notice.

I really really want an early 90's Ferrari Mondial T Cabriolet. Ever see Weird Science with the chase scene of the Red Mondial? Beautiful car. Same movie got me hooked into the 928's too.

The prices on Mondials have really come down in the last few years Leo. I saw one for sale with a mediocre paint job, and a few maint issues.
They were asking $9,900 for it....a Ferrari for $9,900. If I had 10k of disretionary cash laying around, I would have bought it.
As for the 928? Risky Business... I was never the same after that movie.

Compare Spyder - 928

Over the years, when I was a lot more of a glutton for punishment, I have owned at least one or two models of every European sports car manufacturer on the market. Nothing was ever purchased any where near new of course and though some were exceptional vehicles, they were usually obtained dead in the water (because some rich fat cat had run-um hard and put-um up wet too often) or as an insurance write-off. Although not the easiest to maintain, I always preferred the early Italian design philosophy behind many of the beautifully built Maserati’s because they leaned more toward the sensuous curve of a female. Now with most of today’s design schemes you can’t tell if your looking at a Maserati or an Audi. With that said, I must admit to always return to the Germanic, well hung road warrior heritage of the 911 and the comfort of the 928.

Michael

I know I just saw a nice Black/Tan one go for $15K. Unbelievable. A nice Convertible V8 Ferrari

Specifically this one! I hope that I am not steering your thread away too much as this is just another example of an Italian Spyder.

My problem is that I have never found an Italian sports car that I can fit in. They do not make them for a 6-3 guy.(now with a gut but not always)

Ha ha, that's funny and so true for us as we grow older. Why are these such perfect sized cars when we were young, but as we get older, we can somewhat start to afford them. It's not fair Yes, I am only 5' 8" but the gut factor is also prevalent.

Well Leo, this might be heresy... but the interior of a mondial is somewhat cheesy. That being said... Yes please, I'll take one! As for the size issue, I hear ya, I'm 5'10, but being a power lifter, I'm wide. Doubt I would fit into that 240z I had when I was 25.

I hear you too. No way I can properly fit in my old Triumph TR7 either.

Kerry:

Big normally aspirated V-8 in the front, wheelbase within mm., similar weight, transaxle, same market target: the similarities are amazing. The Maser was actually cheaper than the 928 GTS. I would even say it was the closest thing in 2002 to the 1995 928 GTS. 928s fit right in with the best Italy has to offer in the front engine GT category as do Britain's Aston Martins. Wheelbases of the 550 Maranello and Maser Spyder are all very close to the 928. I love my 928s but I needed a modern low mileage ride and I'm glad that I was able to buy the Maser. I'm only surprised that more 928 types haven't gone this route.

Good Ol' Days -

Speaking of the good ol’ days - A few years back I had a friend who loved fast sports cars but was built like a sumo wrestler. Although his girth was a negative for his professional sports car career, it did help him get through one of the initial cuts for the Cowboy's try-outs as a walk-on. He told a great story during his short lived rookie training camp about being pulled over by a highway patrolman because he was driving from the middle of the bench seat of his Oldsmobile 98. I am sure it looked pretty strange with two similarly sized team mates in the back seat while Big Mac occupied the front and applied the gas/brake peddle with his left foot. Anyway - the policemen did a pretty good job of keeping a straight face for most of the questioning but finally couldn’t contain themselves when Big Mac and his buddies had to get completely out of the car just to get at their Cowboy field team identification cards to prove their stories and not trying to be a wise ass. Oh for the good ol’ days……

Michael

The auction for that black vert viewed above was an 85, pre-fun model. BUT, the "T" model(89-93?), with the 348 motor, etc, was for sure a great car.

Here is a REAL nice example of a "T" currently available , and with 355 wheels, etc.
Oh Yeeeeah....

Yes, I know this. I was just pointing out how a Mondial really isn't too far out of reach for us anymore.

You LOVE that T example currently on EBAY, for sure!!!!
Wouldn't mind rockin that for myself. But, would rather a 355, even a spyder, but would take the Berlinetta if I had the choice.

AND, Yes, the Mondial is not too far outta reach, BUT we are still gonna cough it up for a nice "T"...

Yeah, I am dreamingly following that one and another one with Grey Interior. I love the Black Interior but could do without the red piping. Although, I guess I could live with it
