old rear cam gasket removal tips?
So, I've got the rear cam cover off, but how do I scrape off the old, rock-hard gasket. There is so little room to work between the the rear of the engine and the firewall. I tried a mirror and a plastic scraper, but 1) the scraper cannot bend at all the necessary angles because of the lack of room and 2) the scraper is not stout enough to break loose parts of the old dried seal.
I tried using a wire brush, but it's too weak for the caked-on seal. I tentatively used an assortment of flat screwdrivers but quit because I was afraid I'd gouge the surface. Any tips?

It may sound dumb but here goes. When I can't loosen or remove things, heat works. Try a paint heat stripping gun, a hair dryer is not hot enough. There is no open flame so I don't think fire will be a problem. The heat should loosen the gasket material enough to remove it with out much effort. Just thinking out of the box. Let us know how you make out.

a little gasket remover just spread it on and let it sit for a while then scrape it off. Usually softens it up.

try using a fresh razor blade once the edge is under the old gasket it will come off in pieces

Thanks for the help.
Is the razor blade safe to use on the aluminum? The last thing I want to do gouge the surface.

just try to slide the blade under the old gasket once you do this the gasket should come off in a few big pieces it is made of cork.
Roger sells the new style silicone gaskets for the rear cam seal, if you use these dont over tighten them

Update- Well, after about 1 hour of combined worked between last night and tonight, I FINALLY got the driver's side gasket off. I swear that thing was super glued into place. I used some gasket remover spray and let it sit for about an hour and then used a box cutter blade (the trapezoid shaped one - standard ones were too small to work with) to scrape and pry the old one off. There was "sliding" the blade under that thing; it was literally baked on.
I had to force myself to be patient the whole time because it was definitely slow going. You have to position your body over the fender just right and then maneuver your hand into just the right position, all the while holding a mirror with the other hand so you can see what you are doing. A real pain in the a**. I still need to put the new gasket on that I received from Roger on Monday. I am hoping that the passenger side will be easier because there are no brake / clutch / vacuum lines to get in the way on that side.
