86.5 928
I am looking to purchase a 86.5 928. This car has about 60,000 miles. No history attached to it. What are to issues related to this year that may make it difficult to restore?
What way would make this year unique other that the first year for 32 valve. What would be the value of this car if the rating scale would be 10 best 1 worst. This car would be a 5 in need of paint and spoiler, frt. Thanks |

Its hard to believe that a non-documented sports car 24 years old has 60,000 miles. My wife put 19K on one just driving to the grocery store in 18 months.
Nothing is particularly difficult if engine and transmission are operable and solid. Just that there could be a tremendous amount of stuff that needs to be refreshed becuase of wear. On the other hand, you have a parts car.

What kind of a value would be expected for an average cat for this year?
Do 928 buyer stay away from this year? |

Auto, no history of MM/WP/TB, CV Joint boots cracked, Steering pump leak and cracked rack boots, oily top of motor from dissolving crankcase breather hose, needs plugs/wires/caps....but running and shifting solidly and running at good temperature.... I'd say $2000 up to $3500 but the interior would need to be good and body would need to be straight.
928 buyers don't stay away from any year per se. 86.5 should have also the larger brakes and better suspension, S4, but some have been known to have been quietly stripped of these goodies.

Agreed. He sums it up.
Listen to the motor, feel the tranny out... main concerns.

per Chris, make sure it has the 4 piston Brembo brakes (they'll say "Porsche"on the calipers)--they could have been pirated....
paint work can be expensive and extensive to restore (ask me how I know). body--water leaks thru to the interior (seals-hatch, sunroof, door panels) engine should have good compression/leakdown numbers (85 was the first yr of 32V, not 86.5). Trans-- auto's should shift properly and NOT leak, manuals should shift properly and not grind in any gear while downshifting, no leaks as well other---wiring/electrical issues, hydraulic clutch issues (5-spd), alignment (look for excessive tire wear)....the normal things you would check in buying any used car. 86.5 is a desire-able MY as it was the cross-over between the old style bodies and the later S4/GT/GTS.... Prices vary---check the usual places (eBay, Autotrader, Rennlist, Craigslist, etc). --R
