Upgrading 1986 911 sound system

New Guy! Just purchased my second 911. Traded my last one in 1993 for kids and a wife. Now I got one back. Garaged till spring but I am getting her ready.

The sound system seems weak. It has the original Blaupunkt Monterey SQR 23 radio and cassette deck at an astounding $657 on the original window sticker! Speakers appear to be paper. 3/14" between bracket holes in back and 4" in front.

At that cost the unit must not be the cause?

What is the best approach to upgrading this system without any new holes in my all original? I would like to have ipod capability.

I have an fm transmitter for the ipod I use occasionally with a boombox, but a more direct link without batteries involved would be nice.

I want to keep all the original stuff and ideally be able to, as easily as, possible reinstall whatever I change.

You may want to post this over on the 911 board, 928's can install the same radio unit, but installation may be a lot different.
The radios' capabilities don't change, its how you implement them!

Do you plan to keep your original Blaupunkt? If not let me know, I might like to buy it from you. Mine works but half the backlights are out and only one of the preset buttons work. Also on the stereo upgrade, the original uses a standard cage/sleeve which fits in the din opening in your dash and it is the same dimensions as an aftermarket din size stereo and will fit without cutting or drilling. Depending on depth of new stereo, the rear support bracket may need to be modified or removed but doubtful. I have found a wiring harness adapter at Crutchfield to prevent cutting factory wiring. What is your speaker configuration? I have the two speakers in the door, and four in the rear quarters. Myself if I were changing anything I would probably use componant speakers in the doors and replace rear quarter 5 1/4 speakers and probably not even use the rear 4 inch speakers and keep it a 4 channel system. As for the Ipod, most of these new aftermarked stereos have an option for Ipod hookup and you can run the cable anywhere you want. Maybe double side tape a base to a flat surface?? Thanks, Bill.

I guess I jumped the gun on the speaker config because I just noticed the number 911 and not 928 after typing everything out, but if you are using a montery sqr23 the opening in the dash is DIN.
