Great thread. Thanks. :) I picked up a brand new chrome Craftsman timing light from a pawn shop for $20.

That is the best way to go. Make sure the inductive clamp goes on #1 plug, Right frt plug wire I believe

No, just look at the harmonic balancer marks in relation to the orange pointer. Remember to pull the vacuum advance line to the distributor.

Cool.

It helps to mark the harmonic balancer at the correct spot with white chalk or paint. As mentioned above, pull, plug and mark the vacuum line(s) attached to the distributor.

I like to take pics of the stuff I'm working on with my iPhone. :) |
Pictures are great if you only have a advance line. If you have an advance and retard line, they both come from the same area and are similar size and marked, so labeling is still advised. If reinstalled wrong the 928 won't like it. BTDT :)

I nudged the Timing a hair and now I can't smell my exhaust anymore. It's running very smooth, and throttle response is much better.
I found the top hose on the advace diaphragm was very loose, so I trimmed off the tip and have a snug fit now. After I upgraded to Pennzoil synthetic oil, the idle shot up to 1100, so I cranked it down to 650 or so. The car runs better everytime I do something to it. First tank I got 9 mpg , second tank 12.7, hoping for 15 on third tank. Got the seats working good, windows work good, now need to fix tach (intermittent). May be getting a camber alignment tomorrow, gonna ask if they can adjust my ride height (too low). K&N air filter should be here tomorrow. Just by luvk, found the timing marks right on top earlier, so scrubbed them up and are very easy to see now. Will set timing properly tomorrow (if tach works). This car's turning a real gem so far. |
Playing around with timing
Hi, does anyone have an .pdf with information as to how to set timing on 79 928. I never had to do that but now I can smell and feel that the car has timing off but I don't really have any experience with setting it right. I'm engineer from profession so I will pick it up how to get it done just need some startup help for now. Thanks, Adam
