What year did the nose change and become unaggressive-looking?
 

I've noticed the older 928's have much more aggressive nose styling. I was checking out an '88 and noticed that the nose looked different. That is, the bottom side under the fog lamps, and I didn't like it.

I want a 32-valve with the old nose styling. What's the latest year with the 32-valve and old nose?

I believe it's the 86.5 is what you are talking about. OB with a 32V.

You do know these are interference engines, don't you?

I also agree with you as far as styling. The early 928's look way meaner.

Yes, I learned the other day the 16V's are non-interference. The reason I want a 32V is because the 16V puts out the same HP as my Volvo XC70. What good is that? :D

The reason I am pointing out a 32v is your previous posts and having limited tools, workspace and mechanical knowledge. A 32V is a different animal, mechanical records or not, they are more complicated. If your shying away from a 16V, then a 32V is probably not the right car for you.

Actually, I'm shying away from any 928 at this present time because of my lack of workspace and war chest for the parts.

I figure that once I'm in a position to buy a 928, I'm going to jump into the deep end. I just want the old body styling with the bigger, badder motor. :cool:

2002 XC70= 208 HP/236 lbs-ft. That AWD car is unstoppable in the winter!

Really, for the most part, I have a Saab convertible and the 928, They are much easier to work on than my sons 92 Lumina Z34.

You've never heard of a 928S2, now have you?

310 hp, 295 lb/ft, and 3300 pounds. Mine turned a 13.86 @ 105 mph with little more than a Borla exhaust. It will spank an '85/'86 32 valve and S4's and run right with a GT or GTS, and will do this with the 4.7 liter SOHC 2-valve engine. And it has the more aggressive early styling.

Really, with this car, the biggest problem is tire life~

No, I don't think I've heard of an S2 before. What years for the S2?

Look on eBay for a "Euro" '84-'86 928. This is a "gray market" or illegal car that has been "Federalized". These are hybrids: They have the fuel injection and ignition from the '85/'86 32 valve cars, but grafted onto the earlier 16 valve engine. 10.4:1 compression [premium ONLY!], twin four-cylinder distributors, much better cams, better heads, and a different intake with bigger diameter tubes and NO pollution controls = more power. This thing is a gorilla, but I have to say this in advance: finding one of these that has all the "bugs" worked out is a challenge. These are very peaky engines: Nothing happens until 3000 rpm, but if you take it past that speed you better have room in front of you because that is when it spreads its wings and you get pinned into the seat! People in Europe have these and have seen 275 km/h with nothing but an exhaust change. www.928gt.com has one as one of their company cars [the red car]. The down side: A small problem such as a plugged injector or a fouled plug has a far higher detriment to performance than the 4-valve cars. And most of the "twin distributors" have multiple issues, some of which are arcane and difficult to figure out.

Go for it dude! An S2 will be a hell of a lot more work, but it will be far more fun in the end!

The caveat is later 16v euro motors are (I believe) interference motors. But as Mike (Danglerb) tells me, the euro 4.7 makes 310hp and hauls ass

I am partial to the 32 v motors..i will gladly run with any 16v motor that is not n2o, supercharged or turbocharged:)..though mine has autothority chips,x pipe, flowmasters, RMB custom fuel delivery system, no cats/smogpump or a/c... custom aluminum radiator..and a general diet..so i guess mine is not stock. (and will be turbocharged in the future).
Some 16v motors were interference, i prefer the later cars styling and better drag coefficent..the transmissions were stronger in the later cars also...at least thats what i have read... i would not call the earlier cars more aggressive..given the aerodynamic drag they are ..technically speaking..less aggressive...don't all of you blast me at the same time:)
And by the way the volvo xc90 is very prone to wheel bearing failure so keep an eye out for that:)

I didn't know of the different look myself. I have an 86, 32V, automatic. If I were you, I would get one with Automatic Trans. It shifts just great and the 32V has all the HP you will ever need. This car is not a drag machine, it's a ROAD car, meant for winding roads, high speed turns. How much faster than 160 do you need to go? As for "interference" engine, many new cars are this type today as well. Just maintain the timing belt at interval. I have owned a number of sports cars and I like this one the best. Just came back from a nice ride up the Lake here to South Haven. I am 6'3" and once inside, plenty of leg room, quite comfortable.

I'm still holding out for an S4, Love the updated styling. One of these days....
