ODO gear question
Hi Guys
I have just opened the ODO to replace the gear. At first look the gear looks just fine so I tried to turn the electric motor and then I noticed that it get stuck. On closer look I see that it is not original gear! I have the KM ODO How many teeth should this gear have? should it have 21? My current gear has 16 teeth... When I took the electric motor off, the gears turning perfectly fine so I assume that the main gear is not the original one.. ![]()

I'm sure someone with your version will chime in. I replaced mine and it wasn't 16 but I do not recall. I'll look for my records...keep in mind that I have a '79
I would count the oposing cogwheel. Jon

Jon, by cogwheel you mean the other gear that is connected / part of the main gear?

The gear/wheel that the one in question spins or is spun by. They fit together and spin other gear members. Here is an example of the Euro gear:
Rennbay - Porsche 944 ball joints, power steering, brakes, odometer gears & accessories It looks like it has 21 from counting the picture??

Something does not look correct. The upper wheel/gear looks different than what I've seen for 928's; the larger diameter section looks like it has less teeth than it should. and the adjacent, but on same plastic gear has larger diameter than reference as well.
I also see the assembly frame has a crack over the post you mount the gear on. I also see a bent rod closer to the front of the assembly. I would be careful removing the retaining clip and replace the gear with the suitable one. Or... Another option is to verify the SPedo part number (or cluster part number) as one for a 928, if you have a part from a different P car (other models have different gearing) it could be the issue with a different gear count. Jon

It is not a crack, it is the way the plastic was molded...Anyway, I think the best will be to order a new gear...I just hate this kind of surprises...
