tilt steering mechanism

hey guys,

I was working on the car today trying to figure out why the tilt steering mechanism wasn't working. I figured out that the nut was on too tight and when I was backing out the nut that is attached to the square rod that goes from one side of the bracket to the other, the ball bearing fell out, has anyone had this problem with theirs before and how do you out it back in.
Do I take the nut all the way out and slide the square rod out and reinstall the spring and ball bearing in and slide it up into place and tighten it down. I didn't want to go any further without some good advice or maybe an easier way to install it. my car is a 82 928s. auto. Thanks in advance

Good luck, I also had this problem and all that bearing does is make it click into place. I ended up leaving mine out, still functions as it should but no clicky.

Thanks for the response, do you happen to know if it is too much work to pull the square rod and and lower it down and install it then or will it be a bigger production.

The rod shouldn't be an issue, it was that dumb bearing and getting it back correct was my problem. You should be a able to just loosen the nut and it should lower and raise. You adjust the nut tension so the big lever can be pushed up in the proper position to lock down the adjustment.

if the spring is still in place try a wee touch of grease on your finger or a screwdriver and the bearing should stick to it,loosen the nut a bit and it should go back in tighten the nut and clickety click...... eventually
