Solreaver, have you ever heard of an expandable bolt?
If so, could you please explain it to me?
Thanx. ![]()

It's an F/A-18 airframe component. Airframers tried to explain it to me, but I didn't get it.

getting warmer....
OK, in re: airframe components, I believe you are talking about the fancy equivalent of an "anchor bolt" which expands when a threaded bolt (or stud) is screwed down into it. Th recess on the frame is a truncated cone which barely accepts the maximum radius of the (bolt?, Anchor?) and when the bolt is expanded, it fills the cavity. To be honest with you I never worked on the 18, so I can't speak with certainty, But I DO recall "expansion anchors" that were used on Warthogs.
To illustrate the concept for your edification, pick up a few concrete anchors from Home depot and some bolts to thread into them. I use them for removing pilot bearings s I find it is faster and cleaner than the grease /dowel method. You are basically dealing with the same concept as an expandable bolt that goes into dry wall and holds a picture up. ( pick up one of them while you are at HD as well ) On an airframe though, it is mission critical ( EVERYHING attached to an airframe is..) so it is probably pretty fancy, expensive, and may need to be tested /replaced on a regular basis. Does that help? Check with your buddies to see if I am even close on this one.

From what they told me, the expandable bolt is a long shaft with threads on both ends, not really an anchor nut.
I will inquire further tomorrow. It's been bugging me lately.

Look here for a Tech Sales brochure on EDFs made by the Shur-Lock Corp. this may help you understand the design.

The one Airframer that tried to explain it to me said it's used in spots on the plane where there's not enough clearance to torque both ends at the same time.
