Question Timing belt tensioner questions

How does the timing belt tensioner work? What is the purpose of the oil it is filled with? Is engine oil pressure somehow associated with the tensioner. If my fluid leaked out, will it change the tension adjustment? Thanks, Bill.

the oil in the tensioner is used to provide a dampening force as well as to transfer heat and lubricate the moving parts inside the tensioner.

I suggest to use STP oil treatment instead of the engine oil, this change will let the oil stay inside the tensioner without leaking out so fast.
When you do a tensioner make sure to verify that the washer stack is correctly positioned , check the WSM for orientation, replace the rubber boot the inner O rings and the back gasket, I use hondabond on the edges of the new gasket.
Position the inner boot clamp so that the open end is facing up, this places the sealing area of the clamp in the location of the oil inside the tensioner.
Fill the tensioner from the hole furthest away from the center of the car,
remove both of the bleeder nipples or plugs,
use a visene bottle filled with the STP to fill the tensioner this fits perfectly into the nipple hole and you wont overpressure the rubber boot and blow off the inner clamp .
This requires the tensioner to be taken apart to repair.

Note if your happy with the tensioner you can still use the STP oil as it will push out the old oil just keep filling till all of the old oil comes out, if there is any left.
Put a few rags under the inner fill hole to catch the old oil

Stan,
I used STP in my last tensioner rebuild. I was happy to have the suggestion and extremely happy with the results.

I guess im pretty close to giving up on this car, my list of improvements is aroung ten grand, I am a perfectionist but money gets in the way to many times. This car is my daily driver. Today I advanced the timing from where it is supposed to be set at, and it feels like 50 more hp. I want it to work normal at 23 degrees like the book says. Im sure i have many other problems. This car is effecting my family life when it comes to time and im thinking of selling if the right price comes along. The car is beautiful and the interior is very nice but needs a few odds and ends. Needs four shocks. Ive got eleven grand invested, any offers will be considered. bill.
