First I've heard of that. Are you referring to the flat (non Carrera GT) 8-cylinder prototype car picture that was floating around last year? Didn't look like a 928 to me, although it did have an 8-cylinder engine...

I seem to remember reading something about a new V8 Porsche to be introduced in '04. The Rag I was reading deamed it the new 928; but, as Wayne said, a front mounted V8 was about all it shared with the 928.

Is this the one you are referring to.... they mention a little clip. I saw a pic of it, I will try and dig it up. I guess you could call it a new 928..... seems that all the 993,996 etc want to be called 911's |
If Porsche is gonna call that new model the "998", they're just fanning the flames that it's a new 928. A front-engined, water-cooled, rear wheel drive V-8 certainly sounds like the 928 to me. Plus, if they price it higher than the current "911's", it will seem just like old times!

Well, that's the funny thing about trademark law...common-law trademark rights attach simply by virtue of someone claiming those rights. The key is who can prove they were using it first. So, if Porsche is in fact developing a 998 model (and they're already "using" the trademark in some way...i.e. communications with parts vendors or marketing companies), they'll certainly be prior in time to any one who wants to be a pirate and capitalize on the 998 term after hearing about it on some bulletin board.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pirate.gif

Ehh, it's not exactly an easy process, and we're heavily protected under common-law trademark protection (as I learned recently with my dealings with Porsche).
The trademark laws have indeed changed over the years to reduce the 'formality' of registering. Use of the mark in commerce is enough under the law to significantly protect you against any infringement. That's probably the reason why Porsche hasn't trademarked all of it's numbers... -Wayne |

The application process really isn't hard. But, with so many types of goods being sold under your trademark, it would be expensive to register ($325 per class application fee). Plus, it takes 6 months or so to get a response from the Patent and Trademark Office. Iggy (yeah, I'm a lawyer)SmileWavy |

i read somewhere it's gonna be called the GT. it will share both Cyanne (that right?) motors, the V-8 and TT V-8, and might accompany another smaller entry porsche in '04.

I talked to a guy at the Porsche Dealership and told me that he has been hearing of the new 928 and he showed me a picture from a 3rd pary magazine.
