cooling fan on with hood closed

Thats it, take it for a short rip and when I park the cooling fan runs until the hood is opened. shuts off when alarm switch is up and runs when I push it down.

Dose not run when engine is stone cold and I close the hood.

Tack and speedo quit today as well. I must have a ground issue some where.

Anyone have any ideas where I should start.

Thanks, Brad

Ignore your current symptoms and begin scrubbing/replacing all of your grounds.

After that, look at your symptoms and begin replacing switches and relays.

Brad,
IIRC the fans are set up that way on purpose. They aren't supposed to run when the hood is up for safety reasons, I suppose.(To keep a person from sticking their hands in the fans while running?) Fan doesn't need to run when engine is cold. You CAN change the temp at which they do operate by changing the temp sensor on the radiator (bottom driver side).
Tach and speedo are different issues.

Thanks Stepsen,
The other day when I first started it, I was concerned because they were not running. I was bleeding the air, adding coolant and it was getting hot.
Then the day after when I started it the fans came on as soon as it started, ok I thought, what ever. but then later, I had driven the car, put it in the garage, went into the house, came back to the garage 20 min later and the fans were running.
Great I thought, this is what killed the last battery. I lifter the hood to unplug them and the fans quit. I played with the alarm button and they would go on and off. As a mechanic i understand of how most things work but I am so unfamiliar with this car it is just for me to get a direction. I need to check all the ground points to eliminate that as a possible problem.

your sensor on top of the rear of the intake manifold is probably bad.
if you washed the engine or otherwise got this sensor wet then thats usually why it fails.
try unplugging one of the wires see if the fans stop, if the fans stop replace the sensor.

The gauges could bee a loose plug or a bad connection on the rear of the gauge cluster,
yes you have to remove the pod to clean the connectors.

disconnect the battery first

+1 I didn't read into your post that the fans run continuously UNTIL you open the hood. I was thinking you were concerned about the fans not running when you opened the hood. My bad. Mrmerlin is probably correct as usual.
