Has anyone done a 928S4 rear bumper conversion to an early car?
Hello all,
Wondering if anyone here has installed a rear 928S4 rear bumper cover to a 1986 or earlier car? I would like to use factory parts vs an aftermarket fiberglass conversion part. If someone has done, I have a few questions in which I hope someone can help me with: 1) How about the side sections of the S4 bumper that cover the rear quarter panels below the side marker light. Do you cut the bumper cover or the quarter panel? Or, can you mount the cover over the quarter panel? 2) Can the original early rear bumper brace be used with the newer bumper, or is the later S4 brace needed? 3) What did you do about the exhaust opening on the S4 bumper cover? The cutout is of a different shape and at a different location than the earlier car. Change the exhaust/tip? Fill in and re-cut opening? Thanks very much in advance! :) |
this is a conversion thats going to take a lot more work than you have mentioned, the rear body must be cut where the lights of the S4 will reside.( this is under the PU cover, its metalwork)
The lower quarter panels on the car body must be cut off. you will need to buy new S4 tail lights and rewire them to theoriginal harness. The rear inner bumpers are the same, if the bumper has been hit then it s a good chance that the rear bumper shocks are toast as they are one time use only. My suggestion is to fit the correct year parts for the year of the car you have |
But yes, it can be done.. This car is from 1977:

I don't agree. I think it looks horrid-
If you are going to transform your OB or "Original Body" to an NB or "New Body" then you need to do it all the way. Front and rear ends, and the glued on side panels. Doing one or the other ends really destroys the car- it looks cheap, and it will certainly destroy the resale value. Dude- not a good idea. Get the front clip, or bring it back to where it was! And those rare 15 inch wheels? They need to go onto eBay immediately! Somebody with a 944 can use those nasty things! N! |
heh- I just saw this: I flew into Billund, Denmark about 10 years ago, and stayed at the hotel opposite of Legoland. I was a cargo pilot for DHL at the time, I flew there all the time.
Denmark is great! I really enjoyed my short time there. I flew to Kastrup on occasion, and we stayed near downtown; I can't remember the hotel, but it was an SAS place. I was able to walk downtown and see the city center, the town hall, the infamous Hans Christian Andersen statue, et cetra. The beauty of being an airline pilot: You get a chance to sample a lot of cities! N! |
Hehe, how nice. Yes Denmark is a lovely place - if you hate cars! (180% import tax)..
And if you read carefully, below the pictures I state that it is a stupid "upgrade", and that it looks silly. NOT my car! ;) |
Really?? You guys think the rear end conversion looks that bad huh?? I think the later rear end looks much more modern which fits the "Ahead of it's time" style of the 928.
I am planning to do the front end as well, but from what I understand, that's all pretty straightforward so I really didn't have any questions about converting it. Or, is there anything "special" I should know about the front end? The rear is a little more involved, so I wanted to find out more about it before I consider starting to purchase parts. BTW, I think the black 928 conversion looks pretty good. From what I can see, it looks like they did a decent job! I do agree that the early phone dial wheels need to be gone! As far as resale value........I'm not too concerned about that since I plan on keeping the car. I'm sure as you all know, these cars are really not too valuable these days anyway. However, they are a lot of car for the money and are definitely a great bargain! |
