looks like I blew a radiator end tube~

Actually, it looks like my right front radiator end cap has developed a leak. I climbed out of my car tonight, and imediateyl, the smell told me something was burning. I heard a strange hissing noise; Immediately, I thought about the airco that I had resurected from dead last night. It turns out that the hissing is comming from one of the end tanks. Since I have two of them in stock [I maintain a small supply of 928 parts in my garage; While I'm not a 928 "Supplier", email me if you need something; I have several thousand dollars worth of parts in my garage.

One of the parts that is sitting on my workbench right now is a passenger-side plastic end tube. I pulled it out of my parts crib tonight right after I smelled the burning smell.

Tomorrow, I will pull the radiator and take it and my Normy! sourced tank to a shop in Fort Liquordale and ask them to fix it. I expect the response:

"We aren't used to customers bringing into the shop parts. WE will have to charge extra for that", yeah fine moron! These shops are populated with complete clowns, and I will allow them to try to bend the tabs back on the end tube that I own. Will they make it work? That is the question. MEYBEY THEY WILL, or maybe they wont. If too many of the aluminum tabs break off, the radiator won't be salvageable.

you should do some phone book time looking for a rad shop that repairs plastic end radiators.
and ask them if they have the correct tools to effect repairs.
I would also suggest that instead of using a used tank ,
if it is used.
you fit a new tank so the repair will last as long as possible .
The end tanks go bad due to the small air pocket that develops from not being able to vent the top of the tank like the driver side is vented,
when you look at the leaking tank you will see a whitish line around the top where the air pocket was the thus the coolant couldnt keep the tank from getting brittle from the gases that form in the coolant system and it then cracks along the flange from expanding and contracting.
Roger sells new tanks and tank seals

The tank is brand new; I have a supply of parts in my garage.

What I don't have is the rubber seal. The question I will have to ask tomorrow's garages is if they can reuse my previous seals.

I don't actually know that the leak is from the end tank at all; It was squirting from some point around the lower end of the passenger side tank. It happened while disciplining a Mustang owner; I had to run the engine to 6500 in order to dispatch him [damn those things are getting fast!], and when I pulled into my garage a moment later, I smelled smoke. I followed the green coolant trail out to the main road near my house, so that is how I know how it happened.

I got my end tank seal from Roger as well. I would definitely replace the seal when you replace the tank. I replaced my own end tank following a post on RL (link below). Worked out well, no leaks and relatively easy and quick.

Here's the post

Y'all ain't even gonna believe this scheize~

OK. You pull into your garage, shut down the engine, and climb out and what do you hear? A hissing noise. You pop the hood, and what do you see? The hissing is coming from the passenger side of the radiator, and you can see green fluid puddling on your garage floor, and the bottom of your right side end tank is wet and green. The fluid on the ground is green.

What would your conclusion be? Remember now, there are NO coolant lines in this area, only the bottom of the radiator. The upper radiator hose connects to this side, but it isn't leaking.

Hmm?

Well, this morning I pulled my radiator, like an idiot. Green fluid all over the driveway, water everywhere, big mess in the garage. I think it was 9 years ago that I installed it. Anyway, I took it to a local shop along with the end tank from my parts crib and 30 minutes after dropping it off, the shop calls me and says:

"Hey man, where'd you say that leak was? We got it up to 15 psi in a tub of water and it ain't leaking anywhere"

Scheize-

Green fluid. Right front of the car. How many fluids on a 928 are green?

TWO. Guess what? I discovered that there is ANOTHER fluid the exact color of green Prestone coolant/water. If you have ever put dye into your air conditioner when you've recharged the system, well guess what color you will see if it leaks out? You got it, green. The R-134a blows off into the atmosphere, but it drops the dye-laced oil with it.

I retraced my steps today, and I can see exactly when the leak started. No more than 300 feet from my house! A very obvious trail of oil spots on the asphalt of my neighborhood, right up my paver driveway and into the garage.

Well, not good news. I charged up the AC the other day, and I managed to get 69 degrees from my pyrometer when aimed at the vents. It was GOOD cold- not the meat locker of my Ford Aerostar minivan, but far better than it has been in years. I have a gauge kit, and when I charged the system, it showed that the gas pressure was in the normal range, so I suspect that one of the lines....25 years old now....finally gave it up and died. Down in that area, there are two AC lines that run, and the lower one was wet with some sort of oil, so I suspect that is the one that failed.

Well, I learned something today. Hope y'all did too!

Yes, I charged the AC in the stepson last week and by the weekend it had leaked out and was blowing blast furnace type air. Hooked up the nitrogen to the system and pressurized it to 100 lbs. What the heck, it was leaking from the 26 year old hose to the compressor. I guess they just don't make AC lines like they used to. Pulled the compressor and took both lines from it. I will get them rebuilt tomorrow.
I also pulled the short line that goes from the hard line to the transmission cooler. I'm getting that rebuilt also.

if your doing trans cooler lines it a perfect time to replace the rear lines as well they will usually leak over the cats if you have an S4 or later . the trans lines in the rear will also usually begin weeping so its time for them( any year)
