Spare Tire
When I bought my 928 a year ago, the spare tire was stuck into the spare tire well very tight. The guy I bought the car from said the PO he got it from had the tire inflated on the back seat, and he had to put HUGE zip ties on it to get it to shrink back into shape enough to store it properly. I have since removed the spare tire (hard to get to the battery otherwise), removed the zip ties, and for the life of me cannot manage to get it back in place. The tread is not round, but closer to a 5 sided figure. Any tricks to storing it properly?
On a side note, does the tire have to be mounted first, with vehicle weight on it, before it can be properly inflated? I tried to inflate it once (off the car) with no luck; one sidewall popped out caused the tread to shift to one side, preventing the other sidewall from popping out.

I don't even carry my spare anymore. I have a cell phone to call AAA or a towtruck or a friend/relative with a trailer.

As long as you don't put air in them most people don't have any trouble with the spare.
![]() Tricks on deflating, put a strap ratchet around the circumference and crank it tight, use a vacuum pump. Thats weird, lopsided inflation. My guess is if at rated pressure it doesn't assume proper shape within a reasonable time, its gone bad. |

I have always wondered about our spare tires being 25 or 30 years old and asking the tire to stretch and carry automotive weight doesn't sound like a very good idea to me because practically everything else rubberized (like vacuum lines, fuel lines, brake lines, exterior seals...) is degrading/disintegrating. I have always imagined trying to inflate an old spare on the side of the road and it catastrophically failing. But maybe that's just me.
Is there a source of new space saver tires (just tire, no wheel)?

Not sure about all the model years but my 78's had a notice on the spare cover telling you not to mount the space savers on the rear axles. Apparently the torque will cause the tire to separate from the wheel. And that is why all three of my space saver tires sit in the garage.

Well in that case, I guess mine will sit in the garage too. Plus, as Anthony10370 stated, the spares are 25+ years old. Anyways, I like not having mine in the rear compartment, I can fill it with other junk instead like tire shine, armor-all, spare alternator belt, multimeter, etc. If the spare was relatively new and would fit correctly in the compartment, then maybe I would put it back in.
