Vacuum leak? Relay panel. Exhaust
At the top of the intake runners there is a vacuum port that immediately splits with one hose going to the brake boost and the other to the crankcase (?). I cannot get a flow of air when suction is applied to the hose running to the brake booster. The other hose has a restrictor in it and one can suck as much air as one wants through it. Is this a closed system? The car runs much better with this blocked off. I have to purchase hose and replace all of this to see if the brake booster works. Perhaps there is a massive opening allowing the ingress of outside air. I wonder if the lack of this vacuum can affect the vacuum advance.
The relay panel resembles a left over from the space shuttle program. In the bottom left corner, there is a yellow plug with 4 wires (I recall) that have suffered from heat damage. Does anyone recall where they go? The drivers door seems to have suffered from too much use and the wires there have melted to a mass. Nothing that can't be repaired. The second canister in the exhaust exodus has a puncture in it of a good size. Is this a resonator? Thanks all! George 83 911SC CAB/EURO 82 928 in surgury |

Hi George, congrats on your new project. Although my expertise it more in line with your SC, I'll take a stab at your vacuum question.
The booster is designed to accept a vacuum pull, just like the advance/retard canister on distributors. Your booster should hold vacuum, but shouldn't necessarily leak vacuum. In other words, it should behave just like the distributor canister... -Wayne

Hello Wayne, I will be getting in touch with you about an owners manual for this beast as well as some other items.
I was getting into the vacuum because I had no brake assist, no MPG guage function, and a very rough idle. I believe that my vacuum for these functions is very diminished and am trying to understand why. There is plenty of vacuum at the port but it is inefectual because of the amount of air being let in by what appears to be the crankcase vent. All these hoses are very old and brittle and need to be cut off. As soon as I can get some more hose, I will plumb it to the brake booster and see if I have power brakes again. If so I need to find out where all this excess air is coming into the crankcase. There are a LOT of little valves and hoses running around that engine. Too bad Hayes never made a manual for this car. Thanks for thinking of me. George 83 911SC Cab/Euro 82 928 ill |
