ABS light on - what to check?

My ABS light has been on consistently since I bought the car, and the ABS isn't functional.. (I've tested it unintentionally , emergency braking sent me straight into the middle of an intersection with four blocked wheels). Never drove a car without ABS before :S

How do I fix it, and what do I do first so to not put extra stress on the budget. Any cheapo fixes? There seems to be a cut wire in the bottom of the fuse panel. Grn/blu one, and one with a connector on the end of it coming out of the large multi-connector to the right. Will try and snap a photo of it.

Thanks

need more info if the light comes on when the key is turned on then its probably the relay on the CE panel. if the light comes on after the car rolls a few feet then its either a broken sensor wire, dirty sensor , or bad relay on the ABS unit.
What was the last thing you fixed??

The light is on, as I said, consistently. As in when the key is turned to on, during cranking, and when the engine is running. I got a used relay yesterday for free, so will test that first and put it in.

Where is the ABS controller located?

Put the relay in and let us know.
There is a way of jumpering the relay socket on the ce but you would have to search it.

most likely the wheel sensors are bad...re: dirty, or broken wires

I suggest cleaning the sensors first as doing this solved the same problem for me.

OK,
install the ABS relay on the CE panel that should fix the problem, make sure to test it first ,
sometimes used free relays are already bad.
I have swapped out more than a few bad CE panel ABS relays

Relay did the trick, even though it was two years older than the one in my car? Whatever, it's fixed

Check your wiring. Frayed wiring caused my ABS light on my '87 to stay on constantly until I went nuts and R&R'ed all the ABS wiring harnesses.
