84 928 S v late model 911 turbo
I was on my way to Laguna Beach (California) yesterday and encountered a gray Porsche 911 turbo, marked by the nice turbo sign on the back. As soon as he saw me on the other lane of the two-laned left turn lane, he hit the petal and started flying! A little bit down the road and as we got more side-by-side, he blasted it again! How frustrating! Also, in a mile or so span, we drove by a late model 911 and a late 80s or early 90s 911. While it was quite fun driving fast next to the Porsche turbo, it was very humbling...So what kind of performance am I supposed to expect from the 928S? There's no way I can really hang with these late model cars as far as breakaway speed?? In my 928 S, I don't really feel like I'm gaining speed on and on until about 80mph and up. What do you guys think?

Normal.
The 84 is heavy and only has about 220 hp. But it does pull nicely for a 26 year old classic car. It was designed for long drives at steady high speed. To run with newer stuff you pretty much need newer stuff. Not much point trying to make these 928s into surprising sleepers. Can be done with a supercharger. And some stock versions make more hp, but not really enough. Several of us have the 84S Euro cars. I suspect mine makes well over 300hp but wouldn't expect it would beat the turbo in sprints. May be able to hang in a long autobahn run, though. Based upon what I'm reading here on these forums for the past 3 years, supercharging would run about $10,000. $7000 for the basic equipment and a good bit of refresh would be required (pull motor, reseal, new head gaskets, maybe refreshed rod bearings, etc). While it would be a great toy, I'd rather have the latest corvette. I enjoy the 928 for the classic and unusual look coupled with the V8 motor. Great combo for driving. More of a preservation thing than competition. The USA 84 automatic or manual is a great car for THAT kind of viewpoint. Last edited by Landseer; 08-20-2010 at 01:12 AM.. |

Thanks Landseer. I didn't think it would be very economical to do that considering it would be require so much money to soup it up. On the local freeways and on some nice long stretches of streets, my 928S is a blast to drive! It is fun just to get a reaction from some of these high end and often late model Porsches after they see a classic brother from the 80s! I had the same type of run-in with a late model Mercedes CL 55 AMG. That bad boy had some serious breakaway speed!

I think many people appreciate seeing them.
They don't expect to see it racing to keep up, though. That vision is kind of negative, I think. Have fun! They are great to drive. My daughter is taking one back to college with her next week, wife drives one everyday, they are in our blood as daily drivers right now. |

If you want to humble fast street cars the tool is a cheap fast street car, an old Mustang or Camaro. For around $10k my old 91 Mustang could remain a reliable daily driver, look mostly stock, but be stinky fast in a straight line with 500+ hp and loads of traction. A 928 wouldn't beat it zero to 100 mph without five times as much or money put into it.
Street racing is not a path to happiness. SoCal and most other places have some crazy people with crazy cars, running like 1000 hp and race tires. There will ALWAYS be somebody faster in a no rules environment. OTOH on a track the 928 in all versions is a winning platform. Jim Bailey has a wall full of first place trophy's running the stock enough to be legal old brown 928, and the Marks ruin a lot of race days for Cup cars. |

Hi
![]() For what its worth I have beaten both a GT2 and GT3 in the last year... With both of them I was rolling at around 80 to 90 and they "tried" to overtake me, I floored it on Porsche power and they were both about to overtake me and WERE faster than me ![]() By then we were around 120 ish, and as they pulled level with me I armed and hit the Nitrous, and they vanished backwards in a cloud of my blue nitrous/oil smoke (under nitrous mine uses a lot of oil).... The point being once I was over 160 (on Nitrous) they were still vanishing backwards... I knew both the drivers as they were from the local PCGB ..and both told me they were flat out..lol Having said that, it was on straight roads, where nitrous can be used, if it had been through twisty roads with bends and corners, I would have been history... All the best Brett ![]()

928 makes a poor drag car , and auto trans will help quicken the shifts ( so you dont tear up the syncros in a 5 speed )

Maybe not. Old as the car is, he might only be making 220HP......unless he's got it really tuned. Most car's aren't making the factory rating though.
