Removing Emmision Controls?
 

My car no longer is required to pass the state emission test, so I was wondering if pulling all the smog stuff off is a good idea? Anybody done it? Is there a write up on it anywhere?

Not a good idea from a federal perspective, but its doable. Why not leave it on. You on the horsepower quest already?

No real quest really, just don't want to spend money keeping it up. I know I have some problems with the EGR now...and the small tube going to the pass exhaust header is rusted off. Just thought it might be less hassle keeping it running smoothly if all the junk were stripped off.

I'm no expert in the US 86, but I think the tube up from the passenger exhaust is just for testing, not egr.

EGR as I understand it allows some exhaust gas into the cylinder during lower throttle settings to reduce combustion temperature so less NOX is produced.

Start pulling off and rerouting stuff without knowledge of all of its functions may result in problems.

Those are indeed just "test ports" that can be sealed at their source.

I've got one car here without emissions stuff. And even though it doesn't have to pass a tailpipe emissions test, it fails the letter of the law in a visual --- it needs its original equipment, which in this case is a set of air-cats and pump from its original Calif. federalization and some other valving / canister. Yes, I can find a way each year to get a sticker. But its a constant worry that I don't need and it impacts resale / value for one in general, and increases your personal liability. Just some old-guy thoughts.

I don't plan on randomly removing parts....just curious if it had been done and if someone had posted about it....and what was involved.

People have tried a lot of things, but the catch you find over time is that many report a great new thing they have done and how well it works, fail to amend that when it does sour a few months etc later.

If you want minimum problems, leave the car stock.

Cutting corners on PM is maybe the number one reason 928's end up not being driven and parked until sold cheap.

I'm all about stock....until it starts costing big $$$ to replace unnecessary stock parts.

Like my cats are rattling inside...but hate to replace them if not absolutely necessary.

I removed my air pump, and cats.
No problem noticed so far. I was concerned about exhaust valve temp but know one has reported any issues even with the boosted cars.
