Flag Mirrors? R&R

I was wondering if their is a write up on how to take apart our Flag Side Mirrors? I looked and looked at my mirrors and can't figure it out. Anyone?

if they are off the car already then you have had to cut the wires the tricky part with the wires is making sure they are out of the way of the window inside the door when they are remounted. to remove the mirror look under the lower edge there is a ring that is pushes about 20 degrees with a small flat blade, it can go through the bottom edge of the mirror flag part
to remove the motor there are 3 screws that hold it in the flag ,
then with a 1/2 in extension press into the bottom of the base then unscrew the hollow screw that the wires go in ,
this will separate the flag from base.
put the base hold down screw into the base mount in the door so it wont get filled with paint and mask the screw off,
this will also keep the nut plate from falling out

Merlins instructions were right on the money. Here's some pics I took to back it up. I also learned our Side Mirrors are Heated. Cool!

Aluminum Parts getting Black Gloss Powdercoated this week.

If you want to leave the wiring harness intact (probably too late), there is a tool for removing the pins from the large plastic connector. My passenger side mirror actually fell off because the screw loosened up. I didn't have the tool but somehow managed to get the pins out of the connector. (the tool is basically a thin walled steel tube which retracts the delicate locking tabs which hold the pins in the connector) Saved me from removing the door panel too. I still don't understand why Porsche used such a large round connector in the mirror, I would think a flat style 6 pin connector would have worked better. Getting the round connector back into its original location behind the motor was a pita, I ended up removing some of the noise-reducing foam to get the damn thing in place.

BTW, does anyone know what would cause the controls to be reversed when switching from passenger side mirror to driver side? Passenger side is normal (up on the "joystick" moves mirror up, left moves it left, etc) but driver side is reversed, I have to move it up to go down, etc

Tool

I have been cutting the wires and need to find a tool you speak of. The new mirrors use the flat connectors and still must be cut. I have been cutting wires where they leave the main bundle so I have more room for connectors. Threads like this really help.

Could the control unit be upside down??

By control unit, are you referring the the motor in the mirror? I considered that, but it can only be bolted in one way. I'm sure I could fix it by reversing the wires in the connector for that mirror, but I would like to make sure there is nothing obvious that could cause one mirror to work in reverse.

As for the pin removal tool, there are several styles, some with plungers to push the pins out, others simply disengage the retaining clips and allow you to pull on the wire to get the pin out. Here's one such tool:

Lisle 14900 and Lisle 56500 Wire Terminal Tools on Sale

Features several different sizes and styles. Can't say for sure if it will fit a 928 as I have never used one, but it's worth a try. And don't go to Radioshack for one, believe me, I've tried.

BTW MPDano if you take the mirror pivot bolt out, it might be wise to put some loctite on the threads so it doesn't loosen up in the future.

MPDano 09-28-2010 04:25 PM

I was going to leave the pivot bolt in and have it powdercoated as is.

Terminal Extraction Tool Set

Their stuff is pricey but hard to find. I don't have one of these but wish I did, along with spare terminals and crimpers and ...

I know Dean, I had to look up my old post since I too forgot how to put it back together. Thanks God for Digital Cameras.

Gotta cease Flage Mirror Project today till I can get into an Auto Parts Store (All Closed today due to Thanksgiving). Gotta get some Black RTV, Anti Seize and Dielectric Grease.

Hi guys...

All great stuff...I have got to the end of the thread and yes...done that, done that.... but how do you get the motors out of the housing?? On the underside, there are obviously 2 screws. There seems to be a rubber boot/gater that is surrounding the mechanism. But there seems no obvious (to an idiot like me) as to how to remove the motor. It sits behind the silver plate.... I am at my wits end....
