We have a 1980 928 and want to check the WUR. Unfortunately, I can't find it! Can anyone direct me to it's location?
I have a copy of the workshop manual, but it doesn't give it's location. I know what the device looks like from pics on the internet and the manual. The manual refers to the WUR (Warm Up Regulator) as the "Warm Up Control". Also, I'm getting conflicting stories on the what model fuel injection the 1980 has. According to one source on the internet, it has a K-Jetronic (1980 Porsche 928 Technical Specifications and data. Engine, Dimensions and Mechanical details. | Conceptcarz.com), in another, they say is has a L-Jetronic (Re: 1980 928 erratic idle and stall/start problem - The Porsche 928 Forum). Which is it? ![]() |

Post the engine code from the front of the engine, look down to the right of the top radiator hose and you will see it - it starts with M. The WUR is on the left side of the engine as you face it, under the 4 'spider legs'.
If you PM me the VIN i'll give you all the details. That picture looks a lot like my 81 - LJet. Neil

1980 US is Ljet, which is what the car in the picture is, and Euro is CIS. US Ljet doesn't have a WUR, it has a brain.
Ljet has a single fuel "rail" on each bank of the engine with a short rubber hose to each of the electrically activated injectors. CIS has a single fuel distributor at the rear of the motor with tiny metal fuel lines going to each of the mechanically (pressure differential triggered) injectors. |

L-jet. That would explain why I can't find the WUR or the fuel distributor! Mystery solved, thanks!
However, I still need to figure out why the cold start valve isn't' working. Need to do further diagnostics. |

Thermo-time switch operates the cold start valve.
They go bad, at least mine did, making initial startup very difficult. I also had to replace Temp II on my car, separate issue, still made it hard to start This might help. Do other searches there regarding cold start valve or thermo time for more historical discussion. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/928-forum/445895-thermo-time-switch-testing-2.html Try this search link, too, it might work. Be sure to triangulate various threads against each other. These are typically amateur enthusiasts like me trying to hunt down solutions and the cause/effect is not always properly described. Grain of salt. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/search.php?searchid=6458464 Last edited by Landseer; 10-12-2010 at 11:44 AM.. |

Here's how the thermo-time switch interacts with the start valve and the starter.
Looks like it powers the cold start valve during starting when temperature is at/below a certain set point. ![]() Last edited by Landseer; 10-12-2010 at 01:34 PM.. |

These year by year Tech Service Bulletins are like 100+ pages long each and cover the differences in a running-fashion in a fixed format. In conversational english.
In a way, they are the master key to the WSM's, which are poorly arranged otherwise. |

Call Roger. Tell him you want the Morehouse CD set. Load em up. I've spent a lot of money in this hobby in 3 years, but this is by-far the best $70.
Its an like intravenous fix for the 928 junkie. Which I know you are, too. Concentrate on section CD1, section 2.15, subdirectory: tech service info. Wiring diags and WSM are also in the set. Awkward at first, but I now can find information in my sleep. Which actually I do sometimes. Last edited by Landseer; 10-13-2010 at 03:10 AM.. |

So the CD includes the WSM plus alot more info? I have the WSM in digital format and it feels as if it is missing alot of information (whether or not it should actually be in there), think I will be buying that CD...
