radiator questions fix or ?? ...

okay pass side tank cracked on my 928 5-speed so I'm NOT gonna spend 1k bucks on a new radiator .... so my question is who sells the new side tanks and gaskets I read a few post about people doing this but I can't find the parts ? ? also I think the radiator in my car has been replaced before cause it has a tranny cooler and my car is a 5 speed with no need for that .... so is there maybe a cheaper new one out there that would work ? ? ( no cooler ) ??

Thanks
Justin

Rog100 has new tanks and gaskets.
Go to rennlist and search-out JHowell's posts on the subject.
The little tabs are the problem.
Used radiators are a crapshoot, doesn't matter who's selling them.
So is the repair, though.

Hey Gibson36 - Side tank replacement is not a difficult repair but it can be a challenging roll of the dice on several levels. Personally, I’ve had a higher success rate in having the original radiator repaired than installing a used one. The primary problem can be in locating a reliable shop that will actually take on the job of working with a 20+ year old radiator housing. This is especially true if they have experienced any post operative seal failures or in the securing tabs that holds the side tanks in place. Many specialty shops do not want to deal with either the man-hours involved or the potential exposure in a subsequent failure that strands the car owner or (worse) melts down the engine. One radiator shop that I had previously used for many years changed over to a “New Radiator Only” business no matter the make, model, year or the initial problem. Their dumpster out back is absolutely running over with cores.

Parts are available - the issue may be in locating a nearby radiator shop or one that is within a reasonable shipping distance that is interested in helping to get your car back on the road. Perhaps a Pelican Parts or Rennlist member can provide some assistance - Where are you located ?

Good Luck, Michael :)

okay well being that I work at advance auto I went ahead and found a radiator that was as close as i could in stock and put that in the car .... It seem to be working okay so far and it was only $80.00 my cost and the temp gauge is running just below halfway after running it for a hour I don't think I would try and drive across the country like this but it's gonna have to work till I can get a new one .....or this one fixed

Hey Justin- what year is your shark? Which radiator did you use? Mine developed a leak yesterday and I can't quite justify a $1k radiator at the moment either...

mine is a 1982 ... I will have to look when I get to work and find the part # for you I don't know it off the top of my head it's not a perfect fit by any means but it Works.

thanks!

the part # is 431333 you will need to remove your air intake tubes and double clamp the hoses but it fits and works with a little rigging .....( temp fix only ) dont drive across the country like this just around town ( you can get the part at any advance auto parts ...)

Normy 10-27-2010 06:43 PM

It's listed at $198.99; That's a bit steep for a "temporary" part.

Advance Auto Parts: Radiator by Ready-Rad - Part 43-1333

Still, it is a reasonable alternative. The BEHR radiator used on the 928 has metric inlets and outlets, hence the need to double clamp. There has GOT to be another radiator that is common that can fit in our cars with little modification and can be used permanently.

N!
