Mythbusters Ruins a 928
 

Tonights mythbusters show they destroy a 928 by cutting the outer body off the chassis (frame rails) and flip it around so the rear of the car is now the front... :eek:Mythbusters Tests The Porsche 928's Aerodynamics... In Reverse

No, every test busted the reverse theory.

BTW did anyone see how they handled airflow through the radiator on the reversal?

They do some stupid things on that show. Why not test Toyota gas and brakes instead of destroying a 928 classic, idiots!.

While these two guys would like to think they are Engineers, they clearly are not. Testing 0-60 was totally meaningless since there are far too many variables going on to point to one thing as the cause of a lower 0-60 time.

They could have stopped at the wind tunnel test...that seemed to tell the story to me.

Clearly the car was a Euro...and at that it was in pretty decent shape. Certainly worth keeping...they coudl have easily picked a ratty early US car for this test and saved a bunch of money.

Maybe the car will get some publicity off of this. I love the way they never mentioned the word Porsche or 928...that would have for sure gotten them a letter from Porsche's NA attorney.

They should spend time testing the old guy's face aerodynamics with and without that flavah-savah of a beard he wears.

It was a disgusting show to watch. The 928 has a better coeffecient of drag than the 911s of the same era.

Wow, Toyota gas and brakes...that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Where I used to work, my old boss made all the top managers buy the book "The Toyota Way". Then he put in what he said was lean manufacturing, Kanban, etc. It was a joke...he actually made people do book study time and report back on chapters in the book. When he found out I drove an Audi (Oddie as he called it), he told me he had owned on and they were junk. When I asked what he drove he told me a Lexus ES. To this I responded "oh, that's the one built on the Camry chassis". He fed me some line of BS about how the car had more spot welds than the Camry and that you could just tell how much higher the quality was in the Lexus than in American made cars.

The same moron tried to tell the president of the company that the 928 was a "slow" Porsche. I made him look like a fool for making that comment.

The best part came when I nearly made him **** his pants in the right seat of my twin turbo.

Still, when I think back the only words that come to mind are "what a prick".

I did notice that the euro car had fresh paint: I think they chose a ratty euro & had a Maaco paint job where the rear letters were filled in (anyone catch that??) just before the show: shiny paint, no dents, no rock chips (when they were removing the front bumper cover in the shop). 8 sec 0-60? ouch. 78-79 euro I'd suspect. I didn't get a good look at the intake to see the CIS lines on it, but side markers & rear are clearly euro.

It was a later car...the interior would say 1985 or 1986.

seats where, wheels were not, nor was lack of rear spoiler. Plus anything newer than '80 would be 300+hp & be faster than 8 seconds 0-60. an '81 euro auto on the dyno 3 years ago still made 250rwhp/tq

Saw the show last night. I like Adam and Jaime, but.....

1) Destroying a 928 like that...Bad form
2) 0-60 in 8 sec... believable for an automatic. 14 sec quarter mile..? I call Bull****.
3) In the final analysis, they discovered that the Porsche engineers actually did know what they were doing, when they designed the body......sigh..

We could have told them that, I guess it makes for good television.

The car was an 86 (late seats) 310 hp Euro car (twin dizzy), and as much as I love Mythbusters, I HATE them for destroying a car like that.

And they must have added too much weight. 86 Euro with slushbox should be in the 6 sec area.

ah I didn't see the part where they showed a good engine shot. explains the 14 second quarter, but the 0-60 seems way off, unless it was starting in 2nd gear as it sounded like.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but I don't think your talking about Pelican people.

The arguement on cutting the bumper usually went like this...

"You have to cut up the car to fit the turbos, there are no holes in my car for the supercharger installation"

The part I found ultra-ironic was a lot of the same people making those kind of statements were hammering and rolling rear fenders to fit wheels that are simply too big for the 928.

If I install an ABS from a 1988 into an early chassis and I cut to make it fit have I sinned in the eyes of the 928 gods? To each his or her own I guess.

Clearly this is all pety compared to what these guys did to the test car...no way that one will ever ride again.
