Not a pretty smog history, passed in 98 then failed a few years later, looks like they got it to pass for a sale in 2003 and hasn't passed since.

Hey Mike,

How about it being a good parts car? It is an "S" 4.7 and it's a runner. I got pics of Interior and Engine and it's complete.

I also did mention to seller that it's his responsibility to provide a smog cert.

Danglerb 01-04-2011 02:27 AM

Just to be clear the law does not require smog, it just makes the seller fully liable for all the costs if the buyer decides to pursue it.

OTOH seriously, among a group as ourselves how hard could it be to sort out a smog issue on a Ljet 928?

Ask to see some of the failed smog test results.
Make sure the car is registered non op and fees are current so no use tax.
Buy it cheap and fix it.

Leo, not a good parts car for you, you need a CIS for parts, plus what parts do you need anyway that would be still good on this one and not on yours?

MPDano 01-04-2011 05:37 AM

Exactly what I was thinking Mike. I actually stopped by after work, met the guy and took mega pics and a video of the engine running. The thing was very smooth at cold start and when warm, I can see a very tiny miss. You can't even see it on the video.

Leather Power Seats feel very nice and not hard. It even had the rear Cloth Cargo Cover. It's a repaint and it's not too bad. Hell, it's better than mine at this time.

I drove it up the block since it has a leak in the WP Gasket area, so just a short run with some at stop bursts. It pulls with it's 4.7, but it's still an auto with no chirp.

The car is clear and has a non-op on it. Fees are paid as he showed the PO paid $450

He's very firm on the price. No budging (yet).

Oh, and I dropped my Digital Camera when I left his house (not happy about that). LCD broke. Grrrr.

Engine sounds fine.
Could be a great back-up car!
How does it shift?
Who really cares about wheel chirp, you can get that from a minivan.

He said it slips, but I didn't notice it as my test was short. They topped off the reservoir but didn't change the fluid and filter.

Shift numbers say 2 3 D

Where is 1st and is this a 3 or 4 speed?

neil30076 01-04-2011 09:45 AM

^^^ agree - offer him mid point between your last offer and what he wants - show up with cash when his wife is there, they can be very influentual!

A 3 speed has D, 2,1
4 speed has D, 3, 2 - no 1. Box will start in 1st, then upshift to second.
At least that is what i have seen on my 81, 84S and 86(S3)
Slip can be for many reasons, not all difficult to fix, first test is to check that the vacuum modulator is holding vacuum, easy to verify. call me if you want to know how to test.

I'm a proud new owner of a $900 928S

Here's the last test done in Feb 2010. Yikes "Gross Polluter."

What do you guys think? Suggestions on where to start?

Landseer 01-05-2011 05:35 PM

Move out of California?

Honestly, I'll bet these guys will have you operational in a week!
These cars seem so durable. Bound to be fairly simple.

MPDano 01-05-2011 05:48 PM

By looking at my Smog Checks on the 81. The new Cat brought down my HC and CO.

neil30076 01-05-2011 06:08 PM

Way to go Leo, if thats the same car, nice steal!. Shout if you need any help - I have a CO sniffer, Innovate wideband, etc...
Neil

Congratulations on your new addition.
My initial thought is your NO is in limit so the CAT may be OK...might want to start on the rich leftovers in the exhaust. I believe you're not burning all the gas. Have you done a wet and dry compression test? What about the sensors?

You can get lower HC in some cases by running low octane, I do this when I test. Low has a lower flash point and will usually burn more/most of the gas (as long as the injector flow is proper on the FI).

rjm65 01-05-2011 06:15 PM

Were you just having serious with-drawels from not getting your car back from the painter?

You going to be around Friday evening so I can check it out? And return your CIS gauge kit, and in return borrow the Kempf tool and flywheel lock. :)

Congrats on the new addition!

BTW: http://www.recarbco.com/technical/smog/smoginfo.html <- has a nice little troubleshooting chart that gets you pointed in the right direction.

Pete R 01-05-2011 06:18 PM

congrats, $900 not bad, I could just run it here in NH. How bad is "gross polluter"? What do you have to get to "mild polluter"? I gotta start a used car business. I can buy trailers full of gross polluters cheap and resell them here at a huge mark up. It's so unfair that the older cars aren't grandfathered out. How can the state justify making someone spend crazy money to repair a 30 years old car. Just do the new ones, the old ones will die off quick enough anyhow. Can you run a shot of nitrous or someother gas under the plenum to fool the test?

Landseer 01-05-2011 06:27 PM

I had one (84 4.7) that seemed to be running extremely rich.
The unplugging the O2 sensor helped a lot.

MPDano 01-05-2011 06:45 PM

The car is actually still at the Sellers home. I put a $400 deposit, had him sign a contract agreement and he had one too. I took all the paperwork he had on the car, which I also have the Title in hand. Gonna pick it up tomorrow or Friday. I need to rent a Tow dolly since it's non-op. Also, leaking Water Pump needs to be changed. Could be something else but that's what the PO said. Big time inspection happening this weekend.

Come on over Raymond. I'll be home.

Neil, I'll take you up on the tester when the time comes.

I am sure it's more that just the Cat, but it's gonna be old anyways. It will just be the start.

I'm going to start a new thread on my $900 steal.

neil30076 01-05-2011 07:02 PM

Looking fwd to the new thread -
Neil
