headlight wire question ...

I'm sure it has been covered time and time again but what are the color to # on the head light motor wires I just got my new to me headlight motor the old one had issues with the gear inside it and I did them one at a time but I got nothing at all outta this new motor so I want to recheck the I have it hooked up right ... before I flip on the place that sold it to me ......lol

The motors changed with time.
Best identify the car you are working on, the old motor part # and the new part #.

1982 us 928 5 - speed dont know the part # on the new motor ( can't see it ) but it's off a 82 so should be the same old # 92862402100

They changed in '87 for the S4. They are totaly incompatible between <'87 & '87+

Make certain - the connectors changed also at this time - so usually obvious

yea i hooked it up and now the lights go up and come right back down then up and down ??? it seems like its not finding the stop spot ?? so ?? im really lost now

Sounds like the relay is bad.

Some disassmble and clean them, since the replacement costs $130.

I've not been successful at that.

don't think it's a relay they are all new . my old one strip the gear on the inside but would work fine with help ? this one just wont stop running ? ? ? the arm just keeps going all the way over ?

Is the HL replacement motor you are describing new or a used one?? If used could be a bad used part, it happens...I got a used fuel accumulator but it leaked out the top even before I swapped my bad one out, bad as well...but the great guy's credited me back.

My HL motor behaved like you are describing..I bought a used one and it fixed the up/down...only other thought would be a bad HL switch. Have you tried to unplug the switch and directly energize the motor with the wires at the switch (bypassing: taking the switch out of the equation).

i got it working figured out I had 2 wires reversed ..... now I just need to adjust the motor as the lights are only coming 95% of the way up but thats a easy fix thanks for the info and help ..
