Window motor or Window switch(passenger)?
Both my 85 and 86.5 passenger side windows are not working.. So tonight I took the passenger switch out of the 86 and put in the 85 and had no results.. With all the history on this site. Which is more common to go bad the window motor's or the switch?.....Also-My 85's drivers switch is smooth and all the paint is worn off. The passenger switch on both cars look to have been replaced(new paint and and shinny)and have a click or pop when they are pushed.. On rennlist, Jadz928 did a writeup on the window motor refresh. They get corroded, plus, there is a tiny little-known electrical breaker embedded in them. The way Jim figured out whether he needed to dive into the door panel (on various cars) was this. He figured out from wiring diagram which terminals were associated with the window motor on the 18 pin connector by each door. Then, he ran separate power to them with probes. If the window moved up / down cleanly, then ok, problem was switch. If slowly running, gearbox corrosion. If not at all, then window motor issue... Not sure your logic in taking a component from a non-working system on car 1 and moving to a non-working system on car 2. I might have used the drivers switch instead. A voltmeter on ohm-mode can quickly tell you if the switch works in both directions. Some of the switches can be disassembled and cleaned pretty easily. |
Regards the worn off indicators on the switches, Nichole on rennlist sells a set of stick on's that solve that problem for about $15 IIRC.
I have diassembled several of the switches (carefully) cleaned contacts, and cut away a small piece of plastic that frequently causes the switchs to not function, reassembled and still in use today. |
You likely have a broken wire in the door near the bend point from opening and closing the door. Once you're in there, run fresh wire from the motor to the connector under the dash.
