How does everyone know each others First Names here?

Had to ask since I have no idea how you know ;)

I don't recommend using your real name on any website. I use mine here, only because a bunch of people at another Porsche website know me by this. I hate my name, want to change it.

Not planning to use my real name as my Username as that would be deceiving. I have used MPDano since the early 90's since I am a former MP in the Army. I was just wondering how everyone knows everyones first name.

I've always used my name. Never seen the big deal about hiding behind a screen name in the 13+ years on car forums. To me, it's like blanking out your license plate in a picture. What is that purpose??? Somebody in NY or CA can see that I own a Ferrari or Porsche in Kentucky. Every day I drive them, hundreds of local people see the car and could easily follow me home. If I was a paranoid person, that would concern me far more than somebody that lives 1000 miles away.

I'll never tell...

Somebody you know in real life eventually uses your real name in a post and others pick it up.

When I started on the "net" there was no net, just people with a computer hooked up to a modem and ONE caller at a time could access the "forum" at a speed of 300 baud, which is about 30 characters per second. During those first twenty years or so it was absolute insanity to reveal personal information to somebody you didn't know well in real life.

I carried this on in product related forums because honest opinion is not enjoyed by all, or allowed by many employers.

Now its a changing world, but I very much prefer to keep my real ID private which means I would rather not have links between my forum name and real name become common. I play too many games with crazy people.

Sometimes people give it out in private messages or possibly emails. No big deal! Just don't give out all your personal info, SS#, birth date, drivers license #, etc.......as you all know, not a good idea!

On forums like this, it's nice when people know my name, considering any pychopath can just google my name and get tons of info, I imagine him also owning a 928 was slim. Now when I get hookers on craigslist I definately use a different name :)
