Quick Access Clutch Master Hack (er, I mean, Mod)

OK, so I'm not proud of it but sometimes ya just have to go directly at the problem... Bruce

Brilliant. :)

Was it difficult finding the proper spot to cut?

Pete R 05-11-2011 02:58 AM

Absolutely the worste job I have ever done on my car was the clutch master. I have a similar hole. I was a little upset about the "hack" factor too, but at some point you just gotta do what works. The factory should have put it in. I too will consider it a clutch "mod" now. :)

F18Rep 05-11-2011 06:10 AM

Not really hard to find the place to cut, there is a bump that is right over the master cylinder's hardline; I just centered about an inch back from there. Maybe I got a little lucky too. Anyway, thanks for the positive comments...;] Bruce

Good work.
I wish there was an accessible bleeder on that master, up on top, against the firewall but accessible through it. Somebody should make that mod, too.

MPDano 05-11-2011 06:14 AM

Now that how you McGyver things. Excellent post and pics.

Mrmerlin 05-11-2011 07:07 AM

if you use a hole saw you can make a round hole and get a properly sized round cover to fit it , just takes a little research at HD to find the correct round cover

So the first part would be a bleed valve put where, here?
http://arnnworx.com/images/928/Clutc...lutchpedal.png

I might actually try it - I now have the customary can't-bleed-the-last-little-bubble, not with a vacuum gun and not with a power bleeder. Drilling/threading a little hole doesn't seem like that much of a reach.

I know I can do it from inside (which btw, when I first read that suggestion a year ago - I thought no fn way). And too, when I pulled open the master the last time I had to use a small feeler guage to shoehorn the piston/seal back in. Not looking forward to doing that while upside-down on my head. And then there is the damned circlip too. Arg...Bruce

PS... I have a mental block concerning holesaws, so discarded that, plasma was next but I didn't have enough beer in the fridge.

Mrmerlin 05-11-2011 07:04 PM

well as nice as it seems to have a bleeder there,
it wont fit because the heat shields on the fire wall are taking up that space, and the MC is actually fitted into a small well
abd you wont be able to reach the bleeder

Landseer 05-11-2011 11:04 PM

Nice picture. Shows the angle pretty well.

I'd mount it like a long metal valve stem on a dually tire, and bring it through the firewall thru the heatshields into the cockpit.

Not sure if it needs to be tapped into the body of the MC or Tee'd into the pressure line because I don't fully understand how the piston works.

Have a spare (new) cylinder here to experiment with though.

Stan, should it not work?

porken 05-12-2011 10:15 AM

It may be a coincidence, but the two 5-speed '78s that I have looked closely at had very clean inspection holes in the fender for the clutch master. Almost looks like a factory job.

I'll send Jadz928 a note and ask if #6 has this.

Is there room to work through that hole?

Mrmerlin 05-12-2011 04:10 PM

Chris the MC mounting base goes into a recessed area about 3 inches deep there isnt any way short of removing the brake booster to enable the bleeder if there was one to be turned and the heat sheilding material only adds to the congestion.
I think its a good idea to have a bleeder on the MC ,
i just dont see any way to have it work, routing a flex line might be an option BUT the line will have to come forwards first and point down,

Why are you drilling holes where there should not be a hole? Do you think the Porsche engineers designed this for you to drill a hole? No! I've been working on Porsches for over 30 years and have yet to find a time when I had to drill a new hole to access anything! So go back to the WSM and read again ... Just some thoughts.

Landseer 05-12-2011 05:58 PM

The engineers did much right.
Configuring this subsystem for air removal was not one of those things.

Nor was specifying carbon steel sleeves for windshield washer tank fill
Nor the pinchbolt clamp on the S3 and later auto drivetrain.

No doubt.

Nor putting a Rear Rim Size that actually fills the Rear Wheel Well on the OB.
Nor designing a metal strip on the front of the headliner to keep from warping
Nor ...

Still Wayyy before it's time though. Love these cars!!

Is this why when I try and add washer fluid to my wife's 84S it all pours out on the floor?

30 years but probably never done a 928 clutch master. Most of us have the manuals. Try doing a clutch master and get back to us on your thoughts of the hole;)
