Engine Main Bearings and rebuild questions
I have the engine disassembled in my 1980.
The heads came back from the machine shop and look good. I'm cleaning up the block and the rest of the parts for reassembly. I'm looking for a set of standard size main bearings, mine has the split #1 bearing. The only standard size I've found for sale are $500. I have found oversize bearings for $125 and $125 for grinding the crank. Does any one have standard size split bearings to sell me for about $250? Honing the cylinder walls? Do I need to have the machine shop hone the cylinders? or can I do it with one of the spring hones? The walls look good I was honing them for the new piston rings. The Machine shop will clean the block and any other part by heating it slowly to 500 degrees and cooling it slowly, then hitting it with very small lead shot. has anyone done this with their engine? I'm worried about the block warping as its heated? I'm use to old school of putting it in a cold tank of chemicals. ![]() Thanks for your help, Dave |

ahh dont go near the bores with a hone or you will make a new coffee table,
insert the new rings after a fit check no bore attention is necessary

Wash the Cylinder's with Hot soapy water after a Gas wipe down or Pressure wash > blow it dry with compressed air and then lubricate it right away with a light Oil like some ATF ( Auto Trans Oil ) or light Motor Oil.
Keep the block covered until you assemble it Top and bottom to keep dirt / dust out . I would just wash the whole engine like that just before I assemble it Main Bering Caps and all >> Just blow all the water out before you Oil it up Pre Assembly . A pressure washer would be the way to go first off. be sure to blow out all the Oil passages 100 % . Good Luck finding the bearings not sure where to get them humm Heard it was hard . However to turn the Crank 10 Thousands might not be a bad idea anyway a 10 / 10 Crank I expect you can shop around for a good job and rate on that Job $75 sounds good to me I just Goggled the Bearings here for $225 with free shipping Link : http://www.***********************/details/QQPorscheQQ928QQGlycoQQMain_BearingQQ19801984QQW01 33-1604584.html if they are not out of them ? that took about 1 Min to find >> Here they are for $185 Looks like the same company Link : http://www.*********.com/catalog/1980/porsche/928/engine_mechanical/main_bearing_set.html no free shipping Humm I bet about $8.50 UPS Send my free tank or gas ha ha Last edited by aluminum; 09-03-2011 at 09:25 AM.. |

Thanks but the 2 links for the bearings are for the one piece #1 bearing. My 1980 has a split bearing for #1.
Cleaning is not a problem, it just takes time to make sure its done well. Has anyone had their block cleaned by a shop? if so how was it done? Cylinder honing is done on engines to break the glaze the rings have made on the cylinder walls. The glaze is removed so that new rings will wear in or "seat" quickly. Also, oil sticks better to a deglazed surface, preventing ring or piston scuffing. There is a section in the Porsche manual for honing for over size pistons. Why wouldnt you do it with new rings??? ![]() Thanks, Dave ![]() |

well since your hearing but not listening
I will say it again dont touch the bores Period. The block is made of silicon impregnated aluminum It has been treated to expose the silicon in the bores, this is why the blocks last as long as they do. Fit the new rings and measure them , then install them . If you turn the crank then use atleast 3 cans of brake cleaner to clean out the oil passages followed by a hot water simple green wash, then spray the parts down with WD 40 till your ready to assemble the engine The oilways will fill with polishing compound and if they are not cleaned out the engine will run for a few mins till it starts knocking

Not sure I would replace the rings or touch the crank if I didn't see some wear or measure something out of spec.

They may not be available from Pelikan. Have you talked to or emailed Roger?
He can probably get them for you.
