manny tranny
OK, I've been looking but so far...... I haven't found anything in the way of a step by step example of a trans removal with pics. I've been looking here and on r -list for it. Any help would be appreciated.

I did a transmission rebuild on an automatic and one of the first things I did was to buy a work shop manual on CD ROM of eBay. It will make things a lot easier on you.

There is a web site called alldatadiy.com. Service manager at the local Porsche dealer recommend it to me and was very impressed! They have different prices for the length of time you want to use it. I went with the 5 year subscription because it was the best buy at around $45. Very detailed color photos and step by step instructions make diagnosing and fixing problems a walk in the park. Hope this helps.

AllData is one of the services that sells information to shops, I have not seen what they have for the 928, but I very much doubt it compares with the full set of workshop manuals and related online information. Biggest issue I have is that online info in the forums is vetted by many many experienced users and mistakes get corrected.
I'll post a thread on Rennlist where there are a few regular mechanics that may be able to offer opinions on ALLDATAdiy.com Leading Source of Factory Automotive Repair Information. |

My local independent has alldata subscription to run the shop. I've got access. Nothing of value there for a 928, at least compared to the moorehouse cds, rennlist and pelican and reuterwerks.
There are at least a dozen threads on rennlist with good descriptions of manual trans removal. Lots of pictures here too. Easy process. I've done several remove / replace. Most important thing is not to put any stress on the trans input shaft during coupling or decoupling torque tube and trans. I've done it both ways, that is, removing torque tube and trans as a unit, vs, decoupling trans and removing it while leaving torque tube under the car. My preference is to remove them as a unit. For that, one must decouple the torque tube from the bellhousing. Easiest way is removing the clutch to gain clean access to the TT/bellhousing bolts. However, with just the right socket length it is possible to remove them without clutch removal. I figure the clutch pack can always benefit from review, cleaning and re-lubrication of splines with the right sticky grease. The extra effort is worth it. The double disk clutch can drag and the center splined shaft can wear --- nip that in the bud. Disconnecting axles at trans, then chaining trans up to rear stabilizer bar, then removing cross member with axles and hubs as one unit is the general access sequence. Something like 8 bolts holding the whole crossmember, plus the front eccentrics for the leading arms. Pretty simple. Leave ebrake cable attached to hubs and leave it attached to crossmember. Remove it from the handle inside the car, then it can be pulled from the cockpit where it enters, just ahead of drivers rear wheel, using vice grips and some wiggling It helps very much to have 6 ton jackstands set high, plus, a trans jack to allow fine tuning the angle of approach. Search some more, you should find some good procedurals and pics. Sorry to those who have already seen these posted too many times. Here are some random ones. The answer to what may be your next question -- female Newfoundland, 145 lbs, all muscle, sleeps where it wants. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

^^ that's how I did it. Makes it easy to adjust the shift linkage too. But if you choose to do just the tranny, MAKE SURE the tt is completely out of the tranny coupling before you lower it or you will snap the input shaft to the tranny.

Alldata has served me well for the few things I've done so far but it sounds like if I get into a major project I may need to check out the above mentioned alternatives. Good to know. Thanks.

Nice guys! Keep those links comming please. I joined r -list the other day but my search has not turned up anything as useful as what you just shared..... at least not yet anyway. I'm giong to knuckle down on this on my Thanksgiving break. Between now and then I'll get the manuals and read all the stuff I can on the forrums, not to
mention collecting parts.
