My possible new 928S4

Tell me what you guys think. It's an 87, with 81K miles.

the good:
EVERYTHING is original even the radio, only a 2 owner car.
I would say the interior is about a 9.
Paint all original, no respray.
Mechanically everything works. (AC doesn't work but he agreed to get it fixed)

the bad:
sunroof doesn't close completely
rear hatch doesn't lock.
driver side door panel seems a little detatched.
needs alignment
also not sure if the driver's seat works completely, will need a 2nd look

Price $6500.00

Do a carfax and if its clean a PPI and it might be a good one. At minimum check for flood damage and thrust bearing issues.

Landseer 09-25-2011 11:29 AM

Yep, good advice. Esp. the part about thrust bearing.
Good price. Expect about $4 to $5K parts to refresh intake, motor mounts, tb/wp, brakes etc on a fairly well respected car, much more an a neglected car.

Just finished an 87 with 85K miles here --- you can just about guarantee that unless the maintence was extremely anal and current that you will need to refresh.

Unlikely it was flooded, just looking at that nice interior, though.

Pretty sweet. What they said as far as getting a PPI and Thrust Bearing/Crank endplay check. Nice wheels too.

Original paint is a plus, the Roof can be fixed along with other things. IF it passes PPI snap it up. Good looking color combo.

armandodiaz 09-26-2011 12:17 PM

How does one check the thrust bearing? According to all the posts I've read, there's no way to test it until it fails?

So the owner now wants to sell me the car for $6k as is. I fix the AC. I don't think he like the idea of me asking which shop is he taking the car to.

Danglerb 09-26-2011 12:39 PM

When a proper PPI, pre purchase inspection, is done by someone expert in the 928, you should have an idea of AC costs and checking the crankshaft endplay and flexplate is how thrust bearing condition is checked.

I get the feeling you may be thinking, I'm a mechanic and don't need a PPI, which can be a fairly expensive lesson, but at minimum, drip some hot oil on a dark sheet of paper and look at it in the light for metal sparkles.

A bit surprising this car is still sitting around waiting for a buyer, but times are tough.

thanks for the advise Danglerb. I found this link, which is a great help:

Boxster and 996 have the IMS issue that isn't inspected and must be blindly preempted.

928 is checked this way: My Flexplate - Crank Endplay Check Pictorial - Rennlist Discussion Forums

All Automatic 928, especially 32V cars, should then be fitted with an auxilliary or specially engineered replacement replacement clamp.

It belongs to my B&B Track Car Rental LLC partner, he just bought a 993C4S, and have several other cars and his wife isn't not real happy after the latest purchase;) so something has to go. He would like $25K (remember, this has been maintained, both dealership & carfax verify that and he has had the AC updated ($5K:eek:) and comes with an extra set of BBS rims) Everything works too...
