Hi - new to the list and 928's. Anyone BTDT on rebuilding a steering rack? I ordered the seal kit. The shop manual doesn't seem to have the procedure. TIA.

I have to fix the leak in my steering rack next summer. Has anyone successfully installed a seal kit or is a new/rebuilt steering rack the only way to go?

I intend to rebuild the next time I need one, but have a spare rebuilt waiting to be used.

Steering rack owner rebuilds have been a bit problematic for a fair number of people. If the shafts are worn or scratched up replacing the seals does not solve the problem. Even if the shafts are not scored getting the correct kit to rebuild the rack can also be difficult, as the various self help efforts listed above tend to suggest. Also, many local shops that "rebuild" racks may not grind and replate the shafts, resulting in a rack that fails pretty quickly. Generally, any of our offical 928 suppliers and site sponsors offer rebuilt racks that are more reasonable in price than new (by far), and they have skilled repair facilities they have vetted over time, and do offer warranties on them. Removing and replacing the racks is not all that difficult but in my thinking it is not a task I want to do for the fun of it...or do it more than once because I didn't do it right, or a supplier took some shortcuts....

Mine works great after a rebuild. I had to make one non critical seal due to the fact the kit did not come with it and I had already destroyed the old one removing it. It was the hard plastic one that rides on the o-ring in the center of the rack separating the left and right fluid chambers. Gunar

Some kind of spanner would help a lot to remove the nut that has the indentations on each end of the rack cylinder. I beat mine loose with a chisel which was a crude method but it worked.

I have sold the chiffon white '84, to my next door neighbor.....it has an all brown leather interior. There is one photo of it at P5090003.JPG photo - Jim DuBois photos at pbase.com It was a parts car when I bought it, paid too much for it, it was my first 928 car...had a bad alternator, bad battery in the car with positive side connected to ground, a broken timing belt, very few of its switches did anything, most all the fuses were covered in heavy oxide and semi functional...this was a Barret Jackson auction car that the former buyer had purchased for about $14k.....needless to say he was not happy, I paid him a whole lot less than that for it. I was able to rescue it ultimately for a bit of work (bit?) and a few dollars :D Runs like a champ after correcting the ills...but I personally would never buy a car from BJ and never miss an opportunity to say "good" things in their regard...

This is mine. I paid $1300 for it in simular shape. The paint is original. Shy of a couple of cracks in the paint here and there it looks pretty good. Chiffon is a semi rare color. It was only put on 928s in '82, '83, and '84. So few of them are this color. 84 is also a low volume year for the 928. My white cars sits in my garage and I start it weekly and drive it monthly.
