crank angle sensor wiring issue?

I found an interesting article in issue 212(i assume the most recent) of 911 And Porsche World that talks about the crank angle sensor wiring of the 924/944/968/928 having a problem with degrading and causing intermittent non starts. A company called Autobahn Extremist makes a wiring repair kit for the wiring(125$). This may be an issue with some of our cars given the age. They point out that the shielding wire tends to lose its properties and cause an erratic (or no) signal to the ECU (ignition controller). If anyone gets a chance they can look it up..Just thought I would point it out as a possible issue some people may be having(like me:)...maybe this should be on the 928 fixes thread?
Anyhow... Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Why fix? A new CPS is under $100

wiring

It is not the crank angle sensor..it is the wiring from the sensor to the ignition control unit. It is shielded cable as well.

All the wiring on or around the engine is badly degraded on most 928's, what we need are new modern high temp wire replacements, not patches. You start moving around the old harnesses and insulation is going to be cracking all over inside.

I saw that ad too.
Might be useful. I've had to patch 2 of them. If engines ever come out, I'd look to that advertised shielded wire as part of the materials for a rebuild of the whole harness.

Wire has two cores and a shield. CPS plug has three conventional electrodes, both on harness side and CPS side. To transition from shield into electrode back into shield, the shield is cut and formed into a wire somewhow. There is a chunk of aggressive adhesive on the cable to keep the shield from degrading. If you twist the wires around, the insulation with age gets sharp and can degrade the insulation of the other two wires and short them, intermittently.

I've had to cut and resplice them to fix. One of mine is not shielded for 6 inches. Still works.

So don't be afraid to patch. But the new wire would be nice instead.
