Oh, they are.... lol Don't get me wrong. The early 911 is a classic, but the 928 is just as much a classic whether Car and Driver says so or not. Furthermore, it's a better engineered vehicle and in most cases a better handling vehicle. The only thing that could menace over my 928s is two 930 Turbos. Wishful thinking on my part. We should all work to increase the value of the 928 series. It's stupid that such an awesome automobile could be bad mouthed so much when the '84 911 SC was only capable of about 130mph. I've had dogged out naturally aspirated 944s that could manage 140mph. Even the American version 928S automatic could manage nearly 150mph in 1984.

I first must say that the 928 is a beautiful car. I had a 86.5 and an 87 s4 and sold the 87 to buy a Carrera. I missed the s4 so much I am going to pick up an 89 on Wednesday. I must pick on the above statement a bit. First of all there was no 84 sc, in 84 the 911 was a Carrera and it top speed is 150mph. As for the 928 being a better engineered car that is not necessarily true, I think it may be over engineered in some departments. Trying to compare a 911 to a 928 just does not work, they were both designed for different purposes. In most all cases a 911 will destroy a 928 in the corners. The 928 has been overlooked for years and is due some serious respect though.

The Weissach Axle from the 928 was adapted in later 911s (993 I think but don't quote me on it) I'm sorry, I meant 1983 for the Super Carrera. I get mixed up because I have an '83 and '84 928. Excellence did an article on the 911 SC and gave it a more reserved top speed of 138mph. The Porsche 911 had similar technology for a very long time making it outdated at the birth of the 928.
Also the 928's raced by Devek, 928 Motorsports, and 928 International show that the 928 technology is there to render better lap times than even 911RSRs. So I think it all depends on how far you are willing to go to race prep a 928.

Porsche never had a racing program for the 928, but private entrys include The 24 hours of LeMans in 1984 where a 928 finished the race. Also the Wilhire 24 hours in Snetteton, England where a 928S raced against such cars as the Lotus Esprit Turbo and won outright. Porsche did the 928 a disservice by not giving the car it's own racing program. So on this point, you are wrong.

I am not comparing a race prepped 928 to a stock 911. A race prepped 911 will out handle a race prepped 928 if they are both taken to the same level. A stock 911 will out handle a stock 928 of the same vintage, proven. They are both great cars but the the 928 was designed as a gt car.

Mrmerlin, that is very impressive! I must be doing something wrong and should take a better look at my 928. In 08 my best time on Nordschleife was in a 85 Carrera with a 915 was 9:46 with cup rubber and the best for my 87 manual s4 was 9:58. Now I do not have a lot of laps in either car but the 911 felt more controlled and I have more laps with that car.

I don't think the 928 has been pushed to the edge yet, the nature of non factory supported racing is that the edge has to be avoided, cars need to not just finish a race, but go season to season. One thing I think is clear is that the basic design of the 928 "likes" racing, adding a full cage and gutting out the luxury car stuff doesn't fundamentally change the 928, it refines it.

I can say this. Owning a 944 makes you a lot more free to experiment with a 928. I've never gone into a curve faster than in a 944 S2, but with a little bit of weight distribution, the 928 handles simular if not better than a 944. The thing about the 928 is that it feels so big, but that big in combination with the Weissach Axle makes it stick to the road. I've never raced professionally. However I've street raced Porsches since the age of 17. It was only in the last year that I've really taken the time to get airborn in a 928. The reward of getting airborn, is that it scared the pi$$ out of me, but I learned something when the old car just sucked back on the road. I suggest buying a cheap 928 and rather than messing up a nice S4, GT, or GTS take an old shot 928S out and push it until you almost spin it at speed. You will find it more difficult than you imagined it to be. I'm not doubting the racing capabilities of the 911. History has shown the 911 to be an undisputed champion. I own a 911 2.2 and love the sound and feel of it, but it's too valuable to get airborn.
The question is what could Porsche have done in racing using a factory prepared 928?

Hmm...I watched the movie "LeMans" last night.. Pretty cool, Steve McQueen is awesome.

I'm going to love testing how good my 928 handles once i get the transmission changed out.... I've taken the 944 around, and man, it sticks around some tight curves. I'm curious how the 928 compares. 944 is currently dead... Somehow it managed to get a hole in the top of the radiator... I guess one of the mounts broke, and a bump went through the plastic tank..

MrMerlin, I've seen that one. There's another one where a 911RSR loses control and spins off trying to outrun Mark Anderson's 928 S4. It's good too. Oh, and 1982_928, LeMans is awesome. Check out Banzai Runner. Bad dialog, terrible actor (Dean Stockwell) but killer 928 footage. I might could get you a radiator on the cheap, but I'm not sure. PM me for the number if you're interested. I've raced everything from Lamborghini Espadas to Chevy Cobalts in 944s. I love the way they handle, but they are too troublesome. Not so much the motors, but the chassis and electrical.
