About to do a steering rack replacement

I just received my steering rack and tie rods from 928 international. Because I was going to replace both, I was going to match up the length from the leaking steering rack & Rods from the one I'm removing.

I haven't done a steering rack before, but I know I'll have to get it aligned when I'm done.

Anybody got any tips /caveats etc.... Also, will matching up the length of the existing rack w/rods attached put me ball park to a good toe alignment to last a day or so when I can get an alignment?

If anyone knows a good DYI for aligning also I'm all ears..

Thanks
-Dan

Its essential you find a shop that understands the 928 if jacked up will NOT return to a normal ride height on its own without a dozen or more miles of driving. It should NOT be jacked up, but if they do it has to be corrected, otherwise the alignment is messed up.

when you do the rack make sure to use correct wrenches for the tie rods ,
and the counterholding the rack its a 30mm or 32mm and a 22mm for the rack.

NOTE the rack stop will be kinda stuck to the old inner tie rods tap it towards the rack housing a few mm or so,
Then the big wrench will fit the inner tie rod,
swap the stops to the new rack then install the new tie rods.
you can get a basic measurement from the old tie rods.

NOTE do a quickie measure first as their are 2 different tie rod assemblies

Make sure to be replacing the rack boots the reservoir and the curved hose to the back of the pump, use new sealing washers on the banjo bolts

Pay close attention to the aluminum universal joint attaching to rack. On 3 of 5 928's, all newer than yours, I've found that joint to bind in at least one direction. Under tension, they were sloppy and car was unalignable in two cases. I was unable to rotate 2 of these joints at all in one direction by hand after they were removed. I think they cost about $150 from 928sRUs, critical piece.

When removing rack from the lower part of the joint, you must remove the bolt. Same for removing Ujoint from steering column.

Buy your rack from 928International for assurance it was rebuilt in its entirety to high standards. There is a saddle bushing in the racks that is hard for rebuilders to get, plus special standards are likely applied, that set thier rebuilds apart, reportedly.

Back the removal of the rack from the lower end of U joint. Remove bolt, spread the gap a bit with screwdriver and tapping w/ hammer. If you need to pry, the hardened cap plastic cap on rack shaft will crack.. Buy a new one / check availability.

Rack has an alignment hole so you can eyeball when it is in 50% position, straight forward. Remove, dimple is visible at 50%
