found 928 what's a good price on her?
found this girl on ebay, like the color a lot will surely need a paint job but interior wise looks sound, minus that seat, I do not see any curl in those dash vents which is surprising.. I want to throw a bid on it what price could a pay and walk away smiling ?

reserve was set at 2k. thought 15 would have been a score.. 2k means 18 cash and He'd avoid those awful ebay fees. . .

I wouldn't buy it sight unseen. The body looks horrible so it may have been neglected mechanically too.
The roof and punched out door lock make me cringe.

Buy a car from cell phone picts and learn to regret it.
The other downside is the nature of ebay bidding on a car like this. You are going to be bidding against flake buyers. Buyers who bid with the expectation of negotiating a lower price when they show up and find defects that were undisclosed. You can pay a LARGE premium over the real price when bidding against flakes. OTOH if you are serious, talk to the seller directly before any serious bidding gets going and inspect the car and make an offer. BTW is the low power Euro, not the S. |

I wouldn't give any more than $800 to $1000. That way you might could part it out and make your money back. I'm 90% sure I could have a door panel in the same color by friday. If not the vinyl to rebuild one.

What parts would you sell to make back $1000 on that car?
4.5L AT drive line doesn't sell well, mostly it would be odds and ends. Not bad as a parts car if you have another pre S, not easy to sell any of the rest for enough to pay taking it off. |

+1 nothing on that car is worth anything(in terms of the effort to resell parts). I updated my car and had all the used suspension, brakes and driveline to sell. I threw it out. No one wanted anything. It's scrapmetal. You may sell some odd switches and random stuff but it's essentially worthless

Yes this is mostly true. I'm saying if this person is interested in building and restoring a car. $800 would be a decent price to pay for an education on 928s. Of course, free would be a better start. $500 would be great. I'm saying top dollar on project 928 $800. You could sell a few parts, maybe the engine or seats, strip it out and then sell the shell for scrap. I bet maybe $800 could be made back with ebay (yuck) and scrap metal. I've done it with 914s. Granted that's a more popular series.

People need every non rusted to dust bit of a 914, but the 80 to 82 4.5L 928 is generally a reliable car, or what breaks or wears out does so on all of them so used parts are worthless. The shell is likely a push, metal recovery = transport costs, if your lucky.
Nothing big ticket, lots of $20 and you need to ship it stuff, and $100 and not practical to ship. Wheels, front and rear bumper covers, intake system, fuel tank, seats. OTOH if it was local to me, and I had space, and needed some of the parts, even as spares, then something like $500. The important part is not to add value to the stuff that looks nice, but has no practical value, or isn't likely to sell for more than the labor to remove it. |

Regards scrapping out or parting one of the OB's, I scrapped out an '81 about 18 months ago. My original plan was to make a cafe racer out of it, I paid $800 for it, but it had rust, I found a slightly bent chassis, and ultimately the "bad head gasket" was a split cylinder in the engine. Non-working odometer said 79,000, actual had to be a lot more. So, a decision to scrap it made sense. After several days of serious work it was converted in to several piles:
• sold the chassis as scrap for $43 • sold the engine block, heads, and some other loose parts $38 • gave away the seats, the dash, pod, quarter panels, door panels • gave away the front bumper cover and passenger fender • sold the two door windows for a total of $80 • broke the good windshield while trying to remove the rear view mirror • scrapped the 4 rotors, they were all trash, maybe $2 in scrap • sold the gas tank for $80 • gave away the bumper shocks • offered the transmission (5 speed) for as little as $250, the only person to respond wanted a written guarantee it was "good" and the syncros were all good (all for $250?) • used the hatch latch in my other 928 • used the alternator in mu other 928, it failed in a couple of months anyhow • used the starter in a 3rd 928, still working today, so that was a good part I think • used the compressor as a core for replacement purposes, value? • Used 1 injector in a buddy’s car • Contributed the heater box/fan/etc. to another project 928 At this time I still have all the suspension, the TT, bell housing, decent DD clutch and pressure plate assy, bad throw out bearing, flywheel, transmission, spindles, axles, etc all awaiting another project. I am still considering putting the 5 speed in my ’84 auto, but I would want to have the transmission rebuilt first, as it is completely unknown, never drove the car, and the PO lied about so many things I wouldn’t trust him RE the transmission, ever… Still have other wonderful stuff like the CE panel, all the wiring harness (cut up, saved it for the odd connector) the cluster was trashed, both doors, the hood, good radiator, possibly a good AC condenser So, my $800 car has generated maybe $500-600 in parts sales, or use of parts as a donor. It cost me 60-80 hours to scrap it out, and 18 months later I am still falling over junk that will remain junk for the next 20-50 years, maybe never be worth anything….. even free this car would not be worth it…..just my thoughts regarding the OP question as to value.....

And see the doors, fenders, and hood are aluminum. You could sell those for a little more than steel. Also you could sell them as parts to someone looking for a door. There are ways to make your money back, but not your time. All of this depends on how much you value your time. I mean some people restore VWs, but only if they want to bad enough.

928 don't rust in any easily replaced area, mostly just the quarter window above the fuel filler, so body parts are only for mods or collision repair. 10x as many get scrapped as repaired with used parts, so most of the body goes to the crusher.

The only reason to buy that car would be for the interior which appears to be in good shape and is the cool Pascha. Plus, the dash and center console appear to be in good shape. Hard to tell. Then you can look it over and pull off anything else on it that is better than yours and swap it out. There may be a few parts worth some money. If the headlights are H4s and the fogs and driving lights are still Euro, they have good value. There are always buyers on the tailights for a few $. Take a pic f the motor and sell parts from it. You would be surprised how many people are in search of the small stuff. I parted an '84 Euro S it paid for the cost of the car and left me some better stuff for mine. It was a hassle, but I learned a lot from it.
In fact, I just purchased another car for the wheels and G28/11 5-spd. Last edited by DougM; 01-18-2012 at 05:07 AM.. |

There are some fair number of VW bringing $100k and up. World record price set on a 23 window 1963 VW van a few months ago of $250k. Many in the $30k and up price. Not a lot of 928's threatening those prices...and VW's can be worked on and generally repaired or restored far easier than our toys....

that's actually what turned me on to it, the pascha interior. I am really fixated on getting a porsche with one, 924/ or 928 don't care which really. Obv the 928 is a way cooler car, but 924 cost peanuts. either way, i just got a 79 928 euro off craigs list for 100 bucks, and took a few things off of it. I sold the speedo for 125 shipped, so that paid for the car alone. scrap yard in RI will pick it up for 300. I popped off the headlights and what ever other misc. stuff was still good and easily removed. The 16" phone dials as well which i might have powder coated gun metal for 160.00

yah for sure. they had one of those VW bus things on american pickers a little while ago, and I had never seen one before. Aside from those i would not really want to have a vw. to common, not unique enough for my liking. Rabbit diesel pick up maybe. my buddy has a mid 80's rabbit that he was putting an audi tt motor into. kind cool idea i guess.
