Possible '87 5spd Find
My brother's elderly neighbor has an '87 5spd w/ 60k miles that he might be coaxed into selling. Has some type of oil leak, I haven't viewed or driven her yet. Owner says he has an indy Porsche guy service her. No pix, brother says the guy occasionally drives her in good weather. Assuming this car has the typical maintenance needs for this vintage, any thoughts on price range that I should be thinking of offering? I know this is limited info, so you can add all your qualifiers to your post.

Condition is a lot of it. Can be anywhere between $3K and $15K. Definately not enough info to nail it down any more than that.

Yeah, I understand. I'll have to take a look, won't be down his way until Easter.
I know its not a DD, and with 60k miles over 25 years, a little better than a garage queen. The owner thinks the oil leak is from the "pan" but my guess is it is leaking from further up on top, HG or VCG. Assuming he only put 10k on in the last 4 years, he probably doesn't know the TB and WP need to be replaced as well as tires. In addition, I bet the fuel lines are all original - just waiting to cause a fire. Other opinions welcome, and I'll take a look as soon as possible. |
Just from description in first post, very hard to guess. If he still drives it, knows it has an oil leak, not sign of a fussy owner that fixes everything.
We are all going to be old some day, think about how delicate that coaxing might need to be to talk a 928 owner into selling. Could be a VERY unlikely sale, or bargain. Primary question should always be, is it the 928 you want? The only time that primary question should be skipped is when you find an exceptional car at an exceptional price, then buy it immediately, shine it up and enjoy, then sell at a profit, with the caveat that "at a profit" can be very slippery. |
Well, I know better than to be looking to sell at a profit!
Definitely the car I want except I am hoping to buy low and resurrect a car into a driver rather than buy high and do less wrenching. That said, it is a 25 year old 928 so by definition its going to need a lot of work. But a 32V 5spd sounds great. I bet the old guy wants a huge amount to part with it. We'll see. May still go drive it! |
Trust me on this, you will not have to worry about a 928 providing you with insufficient wrenching opportunities no matter how nice you buy.

Duely noted!!
