Rolling your own fenders-difficult and ugly?
 

Hello.

I always admired the GTS but nada for today.

People have rolled the rears before, but I don't know if anyone has on this forum?

Advice. Good-Bad-Ugly.

Hey mikeesik, I have seen a couple of attempts at rolling your own fenders - but none of them turned out to look very professional. Perhaps it was the technique or the lack of it.

Just my opinion but to do it right I think you would have to work with someone who had some experience and was good at it. The odds of a lucky one-off attempt might turn out OK but then again, it could potentially turn into an expensive lesson in "I'll know what not to do next time".

I remember (a couple years ago) a 928 owner had a website with a couple videos of fender rolling...He used a dowel, did it very slowly. Someone was in the car going forward, and he was using the dowel between the tire and fender.

If someone knows of this website, please let me know, as well...Was a bunch of great info on that website!

There is a tool you can use for a professional result. Some people use bats, dowels, pipes, etc. It can damage your paint. A bodyshop that is a GOOD body shop can do it for you, usually very cheap.

This tool I have personally seen used, and it looked easy but it wasn't (required care and attention to do correctly).

Like I said, looks easy, and with practice its not too difficult, if you take it slowly and use the heat to soften the paint, it can be done but it takes careful alignment and gradual movement to do it without damaging the paint and to make sure its done evenly.
