Direct Injection

I keep hearing ads for direct injection and was wondering what the difference is between that and fuel injection. It appears fuel injection injects the gas into the manifold where as direct injection goes right into the cylinders.

Yes, that is correct. Think about fuel pressures above 2000 psi generated by pumps driven from camshafts etc. If you think a fuel line leak fire is bad in a 928, imagine one in a direct injection car.

Sounds like one of those pressure washers!

One drawback: the lack of liquid fuel hitting the actual intake causes build-up of carbon that would normally be kept clear. Or so I've read.

IIRC the upside to direct injection is the cooling effect of the fuel on the piston crown allows higher compression without detonation.

Yup, my F-150 has the Ecoboost V6 in it. It has twin turbos running up to 15 pounds of boost with a 10.0:1 CR on 87 octane gas.
