Electric stuff wont work properly in hot weather
Hi Yall:
Ive had my 86 928 for 2 months now. Ive loved every second i have driven it. Even when some things have failed and i have had repaired. Ive been a long time fan... any how. I have found issue with the power windows as well as the central lock, whenever the car has been parked out in the hot weather. At times the buttons wont respond. This includes the power seat controls. As it is, and since i bought it, all electrical switches work. The only non working items, the sunroof and the door rear view mirror controls. Any suggestions as to where to start looking would be appreciated. Unfortunately i dont have the luxury of a garage to work on some of these things myself with calm time, but perhaps my issues would be simple enough... cross my fingers. thanks all! ![]() |

just might be simple enough if you havent cleaned those contacts and/or fuses relays that any problem switches run too. easy enough for a first checking.
sunroof switch, motor run? panel in roof above back seats , the motor gear gunked wd40 holding a towel under for drips, will clean/lube it if its the switch and you get it working itl be less struggle on the motor if its lubed. the sr panel tracks on top roof gunked up will bind/struggle and or tracks evenly itll jam , if motor working and it wants to open/close now. same with windows/track bind , the insert cover piece on door (lift handle/screw remove ) pop clips, you can see the window tubes running on plastic, clean lube , two bolts tight check. the rocker switches window/sunroof inop, hmm? all same place . maybe spill down there, car heat, hot weather, aged/dirty time for clean? power seats same thing rocker switch /connections underseat. track bound, you can remove seat (four bolts ) flip it over/protect leather scuffing, wd40 with batterycharger connected each motor clean each motor, and the up/down back/forth track thats moving at the time your putting electricity to it. central locking box clean connections, its also vacuum that may need attn. of course just post more ?'s as everyone is yr specific to getting it done.

When it was 106 degrees, I had a fuel pump relay stick for a couple of tries to start mine, but it fired up after that.

We cannot emphasize this enough : [BEFORE YOU START DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!]
-Clean all the grounds including the ones located above the CE Panel. There is a ground chart available that shows the locations of all the grounds (by ModelYear). I suggest getting some electrical stabilizer like Stabil or De-Oxit. Di-electric grease is not a conductor it is a inhibitor. I do not recommend it. -Service the CE Panel [Central Electrical]. Use contact cleaner and a small wire brush. If you have the blade fuses you can insert and remove the fuse several times after using some electrical cleaner. Finish with de-Oxit spray to condition the terminals. Finish with compressed air to clean things up. If an electronic module has accumulated dust and dirt within a cavity, used commercially available cans of compressed air to blow it out. This will work for the Relays also : -Confirm your fuses are all the correct values -Confirm your main ground (the one in the rear hatch) connections are tight and corrosion free. This is the most important ground. It may be possible the main ground has corrosion hidden under the protective sheath. In any case, grounds/grounds/grounds! Mystery problems have a habit of vanishing once the grounds are cleaned. Good luck. |

On my 84', my rocker switches were all bad. Once I replaced them, all the windows worked, sunroof worked, and rear wiper worked. Those switches take a TON of abuse. Mine got to the point where you had to push so hard to get the window to open, you could almost break your finger!
![]() But, it's always best to check all grounds, fuses & relays first!
